Hi All

The Blurb:
Reason 13, like most DAWs, has lots of features, what really sets it apart from other DAWs is that workflow. Reason is less like a spreadsheet and more like a classic hardware studio - only all in software so it can be saved & recalled (a few decades later). This is Part 1, each part will be released on Monday (Oz time) for 10 weeks.

Background:
I saw a few people asking for Reason overview videos. Then I get asked to make such a series of videos for a course site. I get halfway in, and then the guy raises things that change expectations - info I asked for before committing. I was not cool with that, esp seeing there was no (up-front) money in this game. So it was for the bin or carry on? Waste not want not I decided not to make it a paid thing - just something else on my YouTube, so here it goes.

I will post each chapter in this thread to keep it together.
:-)

Nice one, Benedict. Very generous.

A few nice tidbits in there already – I had no idea the Subtractor was made in collaboration with Nord for example. Very cool.

Thanks

It gets more interesting as we dig into it more. It never becomes a how-to tho as that is not wise for anyone.

I'm excited about this series, there is so much to Reason I know I'm missing out on quite a lot that I simply don't know about yet, hopefully I'll come across a few things in these videos, cheers!

Thanks Jag

DAWs are sooo complex. Just today, testing a "yoo bewte" fancy name filter with wobblers I quickly found I could outgun it with Sweeper alone. Adding Pulsar made it better. The only thing I did was something different after trying a new toy (which was uninstalled instantly). I didn't even get that other idea from the supposedly better device but I thought, "Oh what if I do that..."

Thanks Benedict!

I have made it a Sticky! I suggest you create a YouTube playlist out of the videos so it is easy to find them, if you haven't already.

Yup, there is a YT Playlist that will fill out as the weeks go by.

And of course, I intend to post each chapter here in this thread.

This made me realize it's Black Friday; bought the R13 upgrade, thanks :-D

Regarding Nord, if I remember correctly, Propellerheads co-founder Peter Jubel is ex Nord/Clavia

That's a cool vid of the band Ernst worked with.

Part 02 Why Reason incl Personalization

Most of us hopefully understand all of this already.
My mindset: If you can't get it done in Reason, you just aren't trying - or don't understand & need that thing anyway.

You have a good perspective all your own and it's nice to follow. I used blocks once on a Erasure remix I did with a guy who didn't use reason — to make it easier for him to arrange it. Blank slate is what I prefer too.

I'd like to add that I love and agree with your view on the always and forever eternal question:

Can Reason really insert anything here because I really need to know!

Answer: yes.

Thanks. Yes the only times people tell me Reason can't do a thing, is because they think there is only one way to do that thing. They saw the blurb on another DAW (usually a YooBoober's Tutz) and don't get what is happening under the hype so they believe that the device or menu item holds magic. As I say, a Sine Wave is a Sine Wave is a Sine Wave.

I don't think I ever used Blocks. The idea is clever but not my cup of meat.

Part 03 Rack & Signal Routing

Some people seem to find this confusing. I get that Reason doesn't put everything in one place like most DAWs. BUT this allows for a lot more ways to work and interact from one part of the project to another. The way that you choose to arrange your device flow has a big impact on how you manage the options.

Part 04 Reason Synths

In Part #4 we start getting oscillaty with it, taking a dive-bomb look at the main synth options in Reason (13). Reason's synths are powerful and deep. All whilst being as easy/practical as possible. Virtually no hidden windows or menus, just great workflows and the ability to compete with the best of em.

Part 05 - Sampling in Reason

Reason is more than a DAW with some sample playback. Reason is a complete sampling environment with making your own samples as a central pillar. We skip merrily through the main methods of dance, umm, err, sampling.
