Ok, so I could not resist it any longer and decided to try Softube Modular (going for $ 37.80 at pugindiscounts.com). It actually seemed to work fine in Reason 10, until I picked up the additional 4ms Spectral Multiband Resonator, and everything turned into a laggy hell.
But then I figured I could always run it in standalone mode, but it turns out that Softube have not provided us with that option. Strange, for a vst so cpu unfriendly.
Then I tought, there must be a way to host a VST outside your daw and I did some googling and found that there is. I downloaded something called Savihost that I found a link to in this article:
https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advi ... ithout-daw
Modular works like a charm now - no lag - and I can even record wavs from the host, but the program is pretty old and seems to have been out of development for at least 5 years.
Does anyone have suggestions for a better, newer, more up to date VST host for windows 10?
What are the best ones, free or to pay for?
Best VST Host?
The most recent one I've used is vPlayer 2, which is free:

It has slots to simultaneously load up to 4 VSTs. My only complaint is its UI controls seem a bit laggy at times, but otherwise it's a decent VST host.

Thank you! This looks very promising. I'll check it out as soon as I canNekujaK wrote: ↑21 Jun 2018The most recent one I've used is vPlayer 2, which is free:

This seems very good, and I ran a test just now, works beautifully.... BUT, It can't record audio unless you pay 69$ for the solo version, plus there's an annual update fee. That's a deal breaker for me I'm afraid....

I did, and I thank you. I'm still on the fence here, so I might actually go for Cantabile, for it is indeed the best one I've tried so far.Ahornberg wrote: ↑22 Jun 2018You asked for the best VST host.Libraquaricorn wrote: ↑22 Jun 2018

Take a look at Image Line, FL Studio's. They have a VST plugin that hosts VST, for free.
10% off at Waves with link: https://www.waves.com/r/6gh2b0
Disclaimer - I get 10% as well.

I would also check out Reaper. Maybe DSP performance for Modular is nearly the same as in Cantabile.

Actually Savihost works surprisingly well, and is by far the easiest one I've used so far. Here's the first Softube Modular patch I've built and recorded in Savihost (and then "mastered" in Reason):

My apologies, but I'll spam some more now
This is the second Softube Modular patch I've recorded. In addition to the fundamental Doepfer Modules I also use the Doepfer Vactrol LPG, the Buchla 259e Twisted Oscillator, Mutable Instruments' Clouds, 4ms PEG, 4ms SMR, Softube Tube Delay and Tsar Reverb.
