What's Happened To the ReGroove Mixer?

Hi All!

Just noticed this with the graphics on the ReGroove Mixer in Reason 12.

The bottom pic is very nice and the top one, well, like Ableton and that ain't a good thing.

I'm hoping this is temporary?

Yes, sadly, like with Mimic or Grain, they follow more and more the ableton "flat UI trend" from 10years ago. Another very bad marketing move, the unique-ness of reasons analog design is fading away more & more. And this happens nowdays, where analog become the new trend...

The ReGroove mixer is fantastic but to be honest, I don't think I could use that top one, absolutely awful gui. Mimic has a very nice gui though, Grain is somewhere between awful and ok, mainly the sample window with them flags, Fisher Price looking a bit like the players but got used to the players and although they could've / should've been better, I don't think they're that bad now. Can't see this ReGroove mixer growing on me though.

This could be temporary while they're still working on the hi-res for ReGrove but something tells me not. Something tells me they wouldn't redesign something like that to be temporary.

But Reason was always about "real" devices. I am not talking about to leave the top one as it is, but keeping the style alive. So you can for sure use digital stuff in the design, but then you should design it as a display or whatever and keep the real attitude of the layout. Its their uniqueness-marketing-sign, reason got famous with this, that you feel like in a real simulated studio..

Not sure what you're saying, you agreeing it's a backwards design step or not?

Looks like it was on fire and got put out with bag of chisels.

It's definitely another nail in their coffin (for me anyway) of remaining in Reaper with the RRP.

I prefer the new look actually. I hope they eventually do the same thing with the tool window.

I too prefer the new look. The old look was very out of place since Reason went with the flat look for the transport bar and sequencer.

I like the new look. Matches the transport that we’ve gotten used to over the years. We don’t need everything to still look like an old midi based studio.

Oh, I like the new gui from the ReGroove Mixer and Mimic too. Its more clear in my eyes, very useful. Sometimes the easy look is the best. I dont like the fancy stuff of 3D photorealistic pictures from old hardware and so on. I like the Reason look and the devices.

I love the new look of ReGroove Mixer. Flat design goes well with transport design as it is technically a tool and not Rack device.

I would also love to see main mixer to get some similiar Dark mode treatment.

If I could have one thing done to the regroove mixer I would have asked for a better visual representation of what was actually happening to the midi, that would have been better newer and a more interesting feature

I'm afraid it's not. But I agree that the new ReGroove Mixer is fugly. But with this it at least matches the ugly flat transport as well.

This was promised by them many years ago.

Failing to see what the issue is. It works. It doesn't get in the way.

I preferred the old look, but it doesn't change anything about how it works or how you interact with it.

Now if Reason were skinnable ...

For some reason they have made the ReGroove mixer flat but the new hi-res SSL mixer graphics are still skeuomorphic. Reason now has an inconsistent design language. Some things are flat some things are realistic like the rack and mixer.


I'd say the new ReGroove design fits better with the flat design of the current transport bar tho.

I was honestly worried they weren’t even going to update it at all. It was one of the very last things they updated during the beta.

I don't care much. The old one looked just old and boring. The new one is better to the eyes and easier to read and probably easier for themes.

Maybe it's more "vectorized" and looks simpler, because it's a sequencer tool and not part of the rack.

not gonna lie--I question the sanity of anyone who prefers the OLD look of the regroove mixer. the ugliest goddamn thing in all of Reason, by an easy mile (and that's really saying something, considering some of the older devices). need to get y'all's eyes checked. no accounting for taste, I guess.
