as far as I can gather here's the process.

Create a Reason file and save it.
Edit settings in windows file explorer to show file extensions
rename the file from mysong.reason to mysong.rsndemo

is there a less janky way?
@pushedbutton on twitter, add me, send me a message, but don't try to sell me stuff cos I'm skint.
Using Reason since version 3 and still never finished a song.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the way I create a template is to simply save the song file, then go into Preferences and select that file as my default template. I'm unfamiliar with the .rsndemo extension.

How to create read-only (write-protected) Reason Template:

Save as usual your desired Project who you like to use later as template.
(You have to activate in your OS the "File Extension" Visibility)
Then rename manually the File-Extension of this File from “.reason” into “.rsndemo”, that’s it!
Now you can open your “justmyexample.rsndemo” Project, but you can’t overwrite it.
So you can use this as Template without danger to change it.
You can set it in "Reason Preferences" as "Default Song".
If ever you open Reason, Reason opens this Template but you can't overwrite it.
The location where you place the file doesn't matter at all.

You can put them in the template folder, then do "New -> from template" it will use that template, but save as a new project right?

Correct and the template song continues to be available unchanged in the template folder.

Thanks for this - just when I needed it - works a treat!

Do you mean the startup song?

There are templates, and there are demo songs, and there is one "Default Song" - each is it's own 'thing" so to speak.

All I do is make my template, then save it (on Mac) in User/Music/Reason/Template Songs. Then they appear in Reason in File>New From Template.

Right. Got tripped up by my own folder-naming scheme wherein I save the startup song in a folder called "Templates" So yeah... never mind
