Today we are blessed with a source of amazing Vst instruments and effects in which we can utilise within our music, however it's natural to have pre-misconceptions of what may cost less than a few minutes to download and is free, is worth less to us than something that has a price tag to it.

Thankfully though, the reality is that what may cost nothing is just as equally or even better than a similar product which costs many times more, and breaking beyond previous SDK limitations to bring new features. Free VST's are usually used as a catalyst for drawing customers to their commercial products and establishing a user base who are encouraged by the quality of the free products, in essence... everyone benefits in a variety of different ways be that..the creator or the user. :)

You may not need them now, but you may want to grab them now...rather than later...because developers and their products may not be easy to find should their website or business evaporate from the interwebs...by which time you may have grown outside the eco system such as Reason.

These are a selection of one's worth adding to your toolkit. Feel free to contribute your own top finds to the list.

Xfer free VSTs/AUs: http://xferrecords.com/freeware/

8-Bit Shaper is a bent waveshaper.

It takes your audio single and reduces it to 8-bits for a waveshaper stage. Optional pre and post filtering allow for further coloration of the signal. Wet/Dry control and free-drawing on the graph allow you to control the amount of mangling.
Delta Modulator is a bitcrusher based on a signal modulation technique found in Nintendo NES console’s delta modulation channel.

Dimension Expander is a simple stereo spreader.

[/size]
DJM Filter is a simple SVF which allows for LP/HP in one control.
OTT is a re-creation of a popular aggressive multiband upwards / downwards compressor setting used by many dubstep and electro producers.
Not sure if DJM and 8-bit is available in 64bit, but the others are.
