and my, how they've aged....

you know, it's always weirded me out how popular these guys are. Their humour is very, very New Zealand and it's really interesting seeing how it translates overseas. You can see Stephen Colbert struggling to keep up. One of my all time favourite tv moments comes from his interview with Jacinda Ardern, our old Prime Minister, that was a couple of days after this, where he says to her, you know we had Flight of the Conchords on earlier this week, do you know those guys, and she's like, yeh yeh, they're actually picking me up from the airport, and he has no idea she's taking the piss. It's great.

oh, and also, I've been making my way through the new Aphex album? compilation? the quality is variable but the good stuff is up with his best. Near the beginning there's some beautiful stuff that sounds like out takes from the Richard D James Album but even better, really great. Kind of making me re assess how I feel about his music. Still think he's probably a douche in really life tho.

I have been a big fan of them for years since I first saw them on tv here in the UK.

Love the comedy elements and the songs have me in stitches. I bought both series on dvd and the cds. I am still yet to hear a funnier rap lyric than "can somebody please, remove these cutlerys from my knees" 😂

My favourite Xmas song.

When this was written, Michael Fay was the best known rich person in NZ, and famously a very, very horrible person. Just so this song makes sense.

The album it's from, Hey Spinner, is a superior piece of mid 90s Flying Nun jangly guitar pop, maybe one of the last really good records the label released. Really well crafted Pet Sounds influenced indie guitar pop is normally not at all my cup of tea, but I have a real fondness for this album. The lyrics are funny, the playing is excellent, the song writing is very clever, and the Able Tasmans were a reliably shit hot live band. I don't really know why they remained quite obscure, even for NZ music nerds, because for me they're probably as good as anything in that vein, and definitely more interesting in better known bands like the Verlaines (who I can't stand).
