This thread is currently following a path of being updated each weekend with specially selected ensembles which I think are worthy of meeting the grade and being most useful to you. A short summary of some of the features and what I think about them is included on them*, including the possibility of screen cast video demo's of them also.

Many screenshots of the ensembles have been enlaged by 25 or even 50% bigger than they are in photoshop so you can see the details that may not be clear on the original, it aids as a nice scalable reference guide also.

*Applies mainly to those from Feb 2015 onwards, and tail end of December 2014. ( i.e Post 12 )

Whilst many people seem to go mad over some rack extensions which have a significant price tag attached, it's often overlooked that there are substantially more powerful and feature rich products which are completely free for users to download and use as they wish and as the title indicates, this world is in the world of Reaktor. If you've been out of the loop as a user of the program and not checked out the online library, well this is just one of many that you should be checking out.

As a Reason user, this is single handily one of the most innovative pieces of software I've ever used and has completely re-evaluated my view on RE's as a consumer in terms of features and value for money.

And yes, GRIP is entirely free...

This is a track I just created in to demonstrate the creative potential as a performance device. All processing you hear is entirely created by Grip. The patch is one I edited quite extensively from the original, the device itself is freaking awesome the more I get into it. Anyway enjoy.. ( btw you may need to increase your audio a bit with this one)

No video of this one I can find, but from my own play around of it, it definitely sounds pretty stunning, Really nice gui and is loosely modeled on the original hardware device.

This is screen cast of a track I played and recorded live tonight, showcasing the power of RUHR, Modular synthesizer. I previously edited one of the patches and I ended up with this. This is actually a first in myself actually recording my music and publishing it as a video. The track is completely improvised. and recorded into the screen capturing software.

It's short but it's just really a demo to show you what it sounds like.

Enjoy...

Skanner XT
This one isn't free, it's only £44 and it kills pretty much anything in the RE shop for that price for what it's capable of with being sample based. In previous sales it has been given away for half that price (it was initially given away free in version 1 to users). NI also give away a free product called Micro Prism which is a cut down version of it's payed for version. (See next post)

There are 9 parts of this video series however I've skipped to the last part where loading in your own samples for manipulation is shown to be possible.

Radiansoundlab Synth Set

Few Reaktor ensembles really don't come any more beautiful looking and lovingly crafted than those which you'll find in this list here... and believe it or not, they won't cost you a dime either to get them. Sonically, they have their own unique characteristics, there isn't a huge list of presets provided with them so you are left to explore the sonic potential they will provide you and for you to get the most out of each instrument, below is screen cast of Spawn to give you an idea of how it sounds.

Kontour -Commercial NI Product

Tonight I did another screen cast but probably not of something you were expecting, it's in fact one of Native Instruments latest ensembles Kontour, my very first testing of it, and you'll see me playing with lots of things. I left a little review in the description.

I thought it was worth posting these overviews of the relatively new ensembles from NI which ADSR posted a while back. They're pretty amazing sounding and deceptively deep. I want both :-/, but I have a wired feeling that I'd choose Kontour as I've used that more often. Rounds is pretty complex and takes a while to get your head around it lol. There are a few more video's for them from ADSR.

At some point I'll get back to exploring the free ones.

For more percussion kinda stuff Silverbird is one of the best on there, kinda like the Matrix in Reason but alot more advanced and a pretty incredible set of preset rythmic presets to explore and edit. (125 in total!!) You can easily get lost making beats in this for hours.

Polyphonic Additive Morphing Synth

Here's something that is rather new and rather cool, and something which is Reason/ RE heads kinda dig. Essentially this essemble this allows you to draw your own wave form shapes, includes copy/paste editing and the ability to create vector points over the envelopes and also it includes some fx processing features too.

This ensemble is pretty unique in it's abilitys, in a way that I've not seen before.

I wasn't expecting to post anything quite so soon, infact this completely passed me by with it's plain flat relatively simple compact interface. It is however an amazing sounding synth in it's own right with a lot of patches, and effect / control functions. It's actually very closely related sound and function wise to the commercial version which is Kontour, only not quite as fully featured. If you do have Reaktor like synthesizers and haven't already checked it out then go get Infrustructure.

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/8231/

If you are looking for some drum and percussion programming inside your daw of choice then this is a really cool compact essemble, it's like Reason's Kong in some ways.

This is post is going to be rather on the more orchestral side of things, well sort of anyway.

Ever wanted an authentic Jean Micheal Jarre sounding instrument ? Well you don't really get much more awesome and authentic than this, it came out 6 years ago so there is probably many users unaware of it. All the effects work also to bring it even more alive. If you were lucky enough to have lived through the 80's and seen the spectacle, you'll be transferring yourself back in time..I suggest closing your eyes and playing for this .

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/4923/

Image

Don't have a violin handy ? Fancy some virtual reality ? Well you kinda got that here, play a few keys.. wiggle that mod wheel or assigned control knob and well you got yourself a pretty authentic traditional violin. There's no effects option with this one but that can be added vie Space Master 2, or better still within your DAW.

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/7463/

Image

This one however does have an effects section, there is a lot more to it and you need to be very aware volume wise before you use it as the initial plug is very loud so reduce the volume first before use . There are drop down options to choose how you would like to control the bow and you can also set it to be played vie the keys without solo knob or mouse control using the retrig option. Interestingly it can also sound like a guitar and even a distorted one at that.

Post 14______________________________________________________

It's Saturday afternoon, and everything is going to go boom, ok well maybe in my next posting ; -), but anyways, I've been digging in around in the library and found these excellent synths, infact one of them is a replica of the something making it's resurgence at Namm 2015.. well as least in it's previous form.

As for authenticity to the real life hardware version of this, I have no idea however knowing how well Reaktor is able to replicate the functionality and authenticity of real hardware, it really gives you an insight, into the basics, it's GUI is the best re-visualisation of the original

NAMM 2015: Korg confirms January ARP Odyssey relaunch

Image

If you were ever content with just 2 oscillators, well how about having 6 in this incredibly deep but logical polyphonic synth. The synthesized brass sounds it can produce are excellent. It's like having real hardware..effects are conveniently provided by the SpaceMaster2 Reverb unit by default.

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/5583/

Image

Fancy a bit of Nord action ? Well, from the sound of it, it is excellent, it includes bultin effects and a rear side panel like what you would see on a Reason device, albeit without wires attached. The screenshot below is deceptive however as the grid like pattern of the texture is not there on the ensemble you download and is very much nicer.

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/4879/

Image

(Included just for novelty)
Well, you might recognise this, however as the creator mentions, it's pretty different sounding from Reason's Subtractor, it is however quite a novel re-interpretation visually of the device with sharing much of it's functionality on the face of it.

I remember watching a video on youtube of this one, giving a run down of how it works, I've added it below, but it's pretty cool anyways and created by one of the users/groups that teach the basic's of Reaktor ensemble design , I'll add a few more to this post tomorrow of other one's as I usually at few at a time.

Well, if there is anything that Reaktor has, it's some rather unique synths, the first one being that provides some rather nifty illuminated dials. Sonically it's extremely versatile combining not three below as shown here but FOUR rotaries with 127 types of unique waveforms to choose from, detuning , filter types, morphing faders ect and it's unique characteristics of reverberation. The design has some uncanny resemblance to some of a few Reason devices we know of.....

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/7723/

Image

Now here's something truly unique to the Reaktor library, it's a computer, which has a fully functional keyboard and display. Plenty of patches are supplied but what you really want to know is what it does...well it is in fact glitch like music machine that produces sounds such as like what you would hear on an old 8 bit computer. It really brings back those old memories of programming in BASIC on my old Atari 800 XL... back in the 80's....baffled you may very well be lol....

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/7715/

Image

Post 17______________________________________________________

Short summary...it's quite a crazily sounding device, it's one you will get lost in for sure. GUI wise it does need some changes to make the labels much easier to see, when they are illuminated they are red so they float out the screen and so it's not great in that respect, black on gray, I'm not too sure about either but other than those issue's, it's worth checking out.

Image

Here's something a bit different from the usual synths which have been posted, it's a replica of THE ECHO, I mean the real one. I'll be quite excited to test this one out tonight also.

Summary, well it's pretty great, does what it says on the tin and then some, hard to fault it really, other than not having many supplied patches.

For anyone looking for an excellent mid sized clean easy to understand looking device for ambient sound, well this device is definitely one you want to add to your collection, it's polyphonic so it's very much a instrument as well. Sonically it's very smooth sounding and takes a whole new unique path in sound exploration, great for sci-fi movies too... and what's also great too is that there is literally tons of great patches included. I'd put it in my top 10 of discoveries for atmospheric ambient essembles.

First in the line up tonight, we have something completely different and not different in what you might expect, it makes no sound, it doesn't capture anything so it's not a sampler either...So what is it you may ask...? Well..it is infact a midi controller device which will take over the parameters of any external midi synthesizer you have connected to your system be that patch selection, filters, lfo's and a mirad of other things if your external synth has the capabilities. It's kinda like a midi editor application but designed like a device. It works right out of box so no setting wires up in Reaktor. It took control over my Casio XW G1 synthesizer like it was a possessed poltergeist, lights flashing everywhere as I remotely scanned the performance parameters.

If you've got an external synth you should defo check this out..

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/8057/

Image

Here's an ensemble which shares some similarities with native instruments Skanner and GRIP... with a nice big blue waveform display. It has a diverse array of sounds supplied like Gregorian voices going in reverse, glitched out drum loops and lots of controls to play with. It's easy to use and is nicely laid out., with a highly flexible rejigged reverberation unit bolted on for good measure which goes on to enhance the device greatly.
Well worth your exploration.

http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/7365/

Image

If you're looking for a straight forward little synthesizer, and I mean in size... well it's worth investigating this. This goes much deeper than the screenshot gives the impression of, there are 2 separate A & B sections with more controls and functions for deeper more complex synth control and another for selecting between two different GUI types for the FX section. 75 patches clearly categorised are currently included and many are excellently crafted. In fact a few of them sound like the classic indent score sounds of production companies that you hear before the that big movie. If you make any sort of dance music / film music, then you will enjoy exploring what this can provide you sound wise. The GUI is pretty much a standard but nice affair, it would be great to see a more slick custom GUI to match it's fantastic sound capabilities though.

Here's a selection of synths particularly suited to those who are interested producing film scores and effects.

Unusually named DMO 1, is a synth which is a pretty much a joy to use although the white buttons aren't very clear with their activity status. Just 13 patches are included however with it's very clean and nice pro looking system panel layout and knobs, you will I think over look this, as it just begs to be played. The patches provided really do give a you an idea of what it's capable of, it sounds rather excellent as well despite not having any reverb unit. The chorus, delay, phase shifting / shaping / filters / lfo's, and mixing options are great to have and really brings your creative sonic sound scape to life with the added sound generators and if you're using it your daw and you just happen to add some reverb.... well you're going to be pretty spaced out..

If you're looking for a highly creative device with interchangeable modulation panels ( similar but functionally different to Reason's THOR's), and straightforward but diverse controlling options to produce and play with, well this great ensemble calld Dark Matter is one for you. It's provided with 27 snapshots which really give you an insight to the potential it brings, one named Monument particularly stands out and also on called Chippy which resembles one of the old 80's platform arcade games. It's really good for spacy sci-fi type of film/games/music which the additional effects help provide.

If there was ever a unique and very nicely designed polyphonic synth but rather comprehensibly well featured one with lots of control which goes beyond the conventional sounds you normally hear, well this would be up there. It's another one of those uniquely catered to those who are looking for sound creation that would be suitable in films/games, particularly sci-fi electronics / background type of stuff such as automated machines or generators, as those are the kinda presets provided of which there are plenty. Lots of sounds range from bottle blown type, to chimes with complex evolving textures and chords. The provided effects add a lot to bring life and movement to sounds which would otherwise sound rather dry. Musically it would work well in ambient or perhaps even house type of music also, organ like sounds are in there too. It's definitely one you should check out if you're looking to explore new sounds and creative possibilities.

Lets take the skywarp again..... sorry couldn't resist :- D, but if you looking for a diversely colourful and highly creative ensemble for sound creation then this is one ensemble worth exploring if you can get use to the bold use of colours of which there are many, which form as an identity to the functions Skywarp provides. An X/Y display include pixels which give a visual over position and speed of up to 4 points which are controlled by the lfo parameters. Free form drawable sound sculpting gives users a lot of control although no curve or line tools are provided nor vie shortcut keys, the free form display also acts as a graphic level band range indicator which animates in the alternate FFT mode. There's many snapshots to explore, 44 to be precise currently so that helps give you a good starting point and indication of what this ensemble provides.

For more information, check out the video provided by it's creator below.

Something old, something new, something green is what we're up to... and this is kinda the immediate thoughts that come from finding this, which is a hidden gem in the reaktor user library. With a straightforward, fun, feature rich glitched out sound generator device, it's one you should definitely reach out for if you're looking to add a creative rhythmic percussive element to your beats. With the exception of delay to add space, reverb is absent on this, however this isn't really much of an issue in a practical sense, a variety of 37 patches are provided to glitch you off from the off. The B Panel provides wavetable drawing in addition to the gates/sequence displays on the front besides other modes, instructions are included on the ensemble to help in operation.

In the past 10 years there has been a series of highly mesmerising and horror like PC FPS games such as Stalker which was originally based loosely upon the 1979 film of the same name and took aspects of the real life and tragic disaster at the Chernobyl Power Plant on the 26th April 1986.

Taking these historic events and game artwork themes in mind, it's something this ensemble really captures from the outset I think. Artistically excellent with massive attention to detail in the graphic design, right down to the tiny rusty screws. Clearly someone's come along and decided to put on a new set of button's and knobs to match the colour scheme.

Apart from the impressive design, the technical depth of this device is comprehensive in delivering some amazing authentic sounds and ways to control them. Here's a list of the different types which are included on each unit.

Image

There's a few hundred patches grouped into categories with variations provided, if that's not enough you also have a reverse button to essentially double that in an instant, and pitch stop effects, delays, lfo's, lfo wave types, modulation, pan pots, flexible mixing, time effects, filters, parameters galore...well it's pretty incredible really and amazingly free. Hit the Run button and play away with the knobs or map them to your controller.

It's like going into a factory with a microphone and sampling all the sounds you can hear and then putting them into an amazing machine. You can't play this in the conventional keyboard sense, it would be excellent for game designers in particular and for those that want to add a whole new dimension to their rhythmic sounds within their music or soundscape based music.

This thing kills, and I'm pretty sure any of Reason's devices would suffer from radioactive poisoning should they ever stand against it. It's that good.

A Machine Special

If there is anything that is sometimes a bit samey in your normal daw it's programming drums and beats, sometimes you want something a bit more creative and wild but straight forward to use, maybe something that ties into to the old skool way of doing things. Well this should interest you, it's a drum machine of course, and it's operationally similar to that of using the Matrix and Redrum device's in Reason. To program your rhythmic elements, you draw the levels in the same way you draw the CV Polar curve on the Matrix rather than clicking notes, the side slider selects the track you want to program on. The ensemble provides lots of creative control options and various effects, besides alternate drum set types. If you're into your D & B, Dubstep, high paced BPM type of music, then this will be a great addition to the other creative tools. This ensemble is right up there with the best of the drum machines, simple, nice and clean interface, not many presets/snapshots but considering this came out in 2003, this is a nice bit of kit

If you're looking something a bit more advanced and feature rich, well from the creator of the one above also created this one, it's been created to replicate the aspects of the original hardware Roland TR 909 although from an aesthetic stand point as with the other it lacks the gui to match. However the creative potential is rather immense, particularly from the stand point that this uses a hybrid of both samples and Reaktor's native synthesis engine. There is more kits to select from and more in the way of stuttering everything up as well as the inclusion of reverb. The main display also includes an update over the previous one that's worth checking out.

Wow..thank you! I'm a Reaktor user myself. A few of these I have but quite a few I haven't seen/heard of yet so thank you for shedding the light on them! Also, there's a paid for ensemble that I really enjoy even though it makes my head spin trying to fully understand what all is going on. It's by a guy called Don Garbutt. It's called Spektrumsynth (I believe that's right, can't remember off the top of my head). But check it out! And of course anything by Musicrow and Bosomac.

Thanks :) I've spent some time to day to fix up the first initial archive post for better a better overview, added images and provided additional links :) .

I've not seen that ensemble before, but I'll add it to the list, it's definitely got the spectrum on it, that's for sure :D

Apologies for the delay update, busy weekend last week,eg nightclub/pubs partying, music production, and then caught a nasty cold.

Anyways Cloud Atlas has been added to the list which is one I was intending on adding to that group. I've actually increased the actual size by 20% bigger than the original. ( as with the others click image to see larger version) :)

The ensemble from post 17 has been updated so it's 50% bigger, the gui exposure has also been improved so it's easier to see the functions of the device.

Nice one Scotty, keep 'em coming.

Have too say, this info has re-awoken my interest in Reaktor, but it's been a few years, 16 to be precise.

Thanks for the kind words, it takes a while to check them out and do the write ups ect (sometimes a few hours) which I hope users will enjoy reading. A few special creative one's, and perhaps unknown one's just added to the list.

In the past week it's became apparent that the forum code has changed in a somewhat odd way where it broke the previous linking tag method. This has now been fixed on my part, however video links from youtube are currently not working so still need to work that out in what format the forum now uses, if anyone could give me the heads up om this, then that would be cool and save some hassle trying to igure this out.

In other news I'm working on something special ensemble wise which is keeping me occupied, and soon you'll be able to use it :) .
