Does ReWire allow an external plugin's audio to be used in a track? ex. sending midi to NI Massive and capturing the real time audio.

hello,

yes it does but you have to do stuff which depends on your version of Reason:
you need to have the EMI (R7 i think)
and then you have to have an audio interface that allows loopback
or
(for pc) you get vsthost and loop midi (donationware downloads)
and a multiple asio client driver like vb cable or asiolink driver (called something else now)

and there are instructional videos on youtube to get you through the rest

Noel G had a wonderful thread on the old forum about all this for mac/pc

hopefully someone will post with more specifics

i use a windows 7 pc

***ALSO: many people will advise you to use REAPER and rewire it to Reason and load the vsts into REaper
which allows you to use earlier versions of REason if you don't have the EMI

if you mean sending MIDI from reason to a standalone plugin back into reason then no.  you can do it with IAC and sound flower on mac though.

You can do it (audio) with Soundflower on OS X (use a limiter to be on the safe side, to avoid potentially dangerous feedback should you route it wrong the first time(s))

Good memory.  Here is that thread which I've temporarily pinned:

ambeant,

The short answer is...no. Reason can only be a Rewire slave, not a Rewire master.

You CAN control Massive from Reason, but you need to essentially do Rewire manually. To send MIDI from Reason to Massive, you need to connect a Reason EMI (External MIDI Device) to a virtual MIDI cable (IAC devices on Mac, loopBe on Windows, or similar), and connect the same virtual MIDI cable to Massive. You also need virtual audio cables (Soundflower on Mac, VAC on Windows) to send audio from Massive to an audio track in Reason. It works, but it's a lot of steps and easy to mess up.
