The flags at the University of Regina will be flown at half-mast on Monday, April 14, 2025, in memory of Shirley Elaine Pain. The timing of this honour was unknown when this longer obituary for Speers Funeral Home was written> that covers most of her productive, helpful life... I likely missed a lot of what she did in her life here on this world.

The Department of Film in the Faculty of Media, Art and Performance has provided the following information about her life and career:

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Elaine Pain, who taught in the Department of Film from 1983 to 2009.

Elaine Pain was the first woman to teach film production at the University of Regina. She began her career as an animator in Halifax in 1978 and moved to Regina in 1983, where she began teaching regularly as a sessional lecturer. Initially focused on animation courses, by the late 1980s, she had expanded her teaching to include a wide range of subjects within the film program—from introductory to advanced filmmaking and various film studies courses. In 1999, she was promoted to the rank of Instructor.

Elaine’s research at the University of Regina focused on technically sophisticated and visually striking animated short films. These works were widely screened at festivals, garnered numerous awards, and became part of permanent collections. She collaborated closely with the National Film Board, serving as an advisor on the film Barnstormer (1986) and directing A Letter from Violet in 1992. In the 1990s, her practice shifted toward poetic documentary, exploring themes of identity, landscape, and regional Canadian lives and cultures.

Elaine made a significant impact on the local film community through her leadership in organizations such as the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative and the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Association, where she served on the boards of directors and various committees. From 1992 to 1994, she was the president of the Filmpool. Elaine also provided her expertise as an assessor with the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and other arts organizations.

Elaine served on the Cupar and District Heritage Museum board during her retirement years. She represented the organization at annual conferences and meetings of the Museum Association of Saskatchewan. From 2015 to 2017, she was the network coordinator for the Qu'Appelle Valley Museums Network, and in 2017, she became the vice-chair of the Cupar Museum Board, where she mentored summer students.

Elaine will be remembered fondly as a kind and generous teacher. May she rest in peace.

I send my thoughts to you over there in Saskatchewan. I first discovered the word as a 7-8 year old kid when I studied the little high tech Panasonic world radio my grandpa always carried around. It had all these exotic places in the world listed on its front panel and Saskatchewan was one of them.
