I saw him dj at a festival in Sydney back in 2004. Didn't know much about him, heard he was eclectic and had also seem him interviewed on a Metalheadz documentary.
He was unreal. Started off with my girlfriends favourite artist (ErykahBadu) and finished with mine (Derrick May). We were both fans for life after that.
I always had put so much stock on technical skills for djs, but seeing him just selecting perfect music was an eye-opener. His complilation cd's have also turned me onto so much good music.

there are periods where i create the "perfect" playlist (one genre tunnel vision) then i get to a point where i cant add to it and music loses its appeal for a while, cause im just playing the same stuff over and over. so recently being reminded of gilles was able to help me out of that (i used to listen to him in early 2000s world wide kcrw in the US).michael.jaye wrote: ↑YesterdayI saw him dj at a festival in Sydney back in 2004. derrick and gilles really merge well as they both are interested in infusing jazz and latin american music with electronic music. and im really glad you brought him up, he will be the next target of my best moments thing.
i remember this vid from many years ago having tons of powerful moments:
31:40!

Thanks for the list, I can see a handle of ones I recognize. Can't wait to dig in later on.
And yeh, Derrick is my guy. No one brings the drama like him. Seen him more times than I can count. Uptempo and fusing techno AND house, he's been the biggest influence on my deejaying for sure.
Started watching him in 2000, so that hardgroove/tribal era of techno and the latin/afro/jazz house is in my DNA since.
