I'm thinking about getting this while on sale. It's 55% off, plus you can get more off by spinning the discount wheel.
Anybody here using it? I don't have any of these and the original Planet of the Breaks had been on my list.
This collection is a ReFill only, so will only be accessible in Reason (aside from bouncing). Pros are that it includes REX files, a bit cheaper than getting the others separately, and there's an additional library "Beneath" which doesn't appear to be available separately? Is that any good?
I'm not sure about the contents—I think it's only REX files? So unlike the original that I think is WAV only, won't be able to load these into Mimic. And I guess on that note, that would be a benefit to getting the originals if wanting to just throw WAVs into Mimic and adjusting slices there.
Thoughts?

I have mixed feelings about these old sample packs because you often find they are products of there time. Obviously the breaks themselves are usually a lot older! Even back in the day when these breaks (from sample LP's and CD's) were used and abused on a daily basis by every producer and his dog, they were often (not always) heavily processed and layered/replaced with other samples to give a fuller sound.
So what I am saying is it depends. If you expect to get breaks that will just drop into a modern sounding mix you will be disappointed! They often need dollops of high shelf and post processing to sound anything close to modern and don't forget professional producers have long since beat you to it, so you have rarely heard them unmolested! If you want a lo-fi sound, like doing a lot of work on them or want to sound like a specific drum track from about 20-30 years ago they are ready to go!

These were created and recorded with drummers and are original Shawn Lee, Shawn Pelton (of SNL), and Emre Ramazanoglou. So while these are a bit older and have certainly been used by many artists since, they are original. Many people continue to just use the Amen break over and over, so having any variety is good. But of course I think it is also about capturing a genre that is familiar to an era. I don't know what defines a modern sounding mix, but that can be worse and often means overprocessed.

I have several Zero-G refills including Return to the Planet of the Breaks. I don't need to look it up.These were created and recorded with drummers and are original Shawn Lee, Shawn Pelton (of SNL), and Emre Ramazanoglou. You should look it up
There's loads of classic breaks in Zero-G sample packs. What I am pointing out is they are amongst the most widely used on the market and have been around a long time. It's more a setting of expectations, as I've known people to be pretty underwhelmed by the sound quality when compared to modern sample packs and breaks which are much cleaner.
I am not saying they are no good or don't have any charm.
Yup.my thoughts is that mimic should use rex
Gotcha. Yeah I'm aware of their sound and what they offer. They're classics I'd likely use them for some 90's style electronic/breakbeat/acid, etc.
I used to have some of the other Zero-G libraries back in the day, Heaven 17 and something else, but I have no idea where the CD's ended up :/

Ok so I managed to land on a 40% off coupon with the discount wheel which brought the price down even more to $18.90 Seemed like a no brainer at that point!
I am actually very impressed with it! Lots of really great loops and sounds
Some hard hitting stuff and nice mixes with wide sounding kits.
There's some stuff they could do a better job highlighting in the product description because it's not just REX files—there's also WAVs (still packed within the ReFill), but also individual samples and 42 very playable Redrum kits!
One thing I wish though is that I could browse the ReFill based on each of the 4 libraries, so that I could experience them that way. Instead all the content is complied together, which is convenient for browsing it all together, but I would've liked to browse by each library. Even the booklet which includes main credits for each library doesn't attribute the specific content.

I still dig back through my ZeroG collection regularly, as I build up loops from layers and don’t want to be given one ‘finished’ loop. But I’m the same way with samples, the ‘polished’ and ready to use samples don’t tend to work well for me in general because I want to get in there and work with them.joeyluck wrote: ↑19 Nov 2024Gotcha. Anyone remember the Vlad/Alt Drum ReFill from a few years back? Sounded amazing and I grabbed all three versions after hearing the first one. BUT I quickly found I couldn’t use any EQ or compression because the samples were already EQed and compressed to the point there was little room left. Which means you get what you get, and you can’t really squeeze much more out of the samples.
But these old loops (and old one shots) are STILL useful in my work, but I prefer to work with more raw ingredients than ‘ready to eat’ meals. I have other Loop Loft ReFills, I need to check out PotBs…

And just FYI, depending on what you might be considering buying, I think those coupons only applied to single libraries that are $30 or more after the sale discounts.
