Howdy folks!
Been using Reason for years now and bascially have made it my go to DAW. I was a Protools guy but then when it went to subscribtion based I said screw it and just stuck with Reason. I think Reason have a few versions that seemed like they were subscription based so I just said screw it and stuck with my Reason 10 for last few years.
Well, looks like Reason 13 is a one time payment. I'm curious on what your guy's opinion if I should take the jump and get it. Any features that WENT AWAY from 10-13 that you wish they kept? Any big improvements you really like?
-The only gripe I had with Reason 10 was MIDI editing seemed to be a little tedious and not the greatest layout. I felt like zooming into MIDI was a little lacking....wondering if they did any improvements in that realm.
Just curious on your thoughts if its worth it to upgrade. I'm probably one of the select few that don't nerd out an all the crazy instruments Reason has to offern...I don't go down the sound design rabbit hole but I do appreciate all the power they have with all their instruments. I'm more of a workflow and recording type of guy. I'm in a ska band so what I typically use Reason for is to make a rough idea of songs with me playing a real guitar and bass, then layering on some MIDI drums and midi horns on top. Then i give it to my band to be like "hey heres a cool idea we could do."
Just curious on any of your thoughts. It'd be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Pop

If I were you I would get the R+ trial or buy a secondhand R+ subscription for much cheaper. Some gear products also come with free R+ subscriptions. Alternatively if you like R13 from the trial and can't find a secondhand license, black friday should have about 50% discount for the annual subscription and now there is a 40% discount on the perpetual upgrade option.

Reason never was subscription only.
Quite a few things were added or changed. My favorites are the UI scaling, VST3, tagging and the improved editing. For me it is also around 25% faster than older versions.

Reason has always allowed ownership OR subscription.
What the best option for you is depends:
-Seeing I have owned Reason since forever the upgrade path suits better as a) it is bit cheaper assuming* and b) I don't care about the extra devices R+ delivers.
-For my partner Jane it makes more sense for her to subscribe as the sub price is lower than buying outright + updates*
*assuming 2-year update cycle which seems to be the pattern.
As for R13 vs R10, assuming you will benefit from those extra changes, and I think you will as I have been happy overall with every update, then R13 is better than R10.

Most excellent thanks for responses! I am going to upgrade to R13 shortly!
I see that it's 40% off right now. You guys have any idea if it will get discounted any more based on years past? Not sure if I should wait til cyber Monday to see if it could get discounted any more.
And yeah, I think a upgrade to R13 will suit me better than the R+ subscription. I just really prefer a one time payment and deal with the program until I get sick of it. I got a good solid 5+ years out of Reason 10!!
One last question. Is there anything that they GOT RID OF from Reason 10-13 that I might want to think about before I upgrade? Any instruments or workflow type things that were like "why'd you get rid of that"?
Gratzi!

rewire was removed for one. I wish that stayed, but you can run both 10 and 13 on the same pc ... so if you use rewire > do that.
I can't remember what version line 6 was removed from...
and > possibly some other racks from developers that parted ways that someone here might elaborate on....
The racks you have purchased remain even if no longer included in the shop or reason.

Well they did get rid of the favorite list function for instruments/devices. Which is a big part of why I haven’t upgrade from R11 myself. I use that all the time.
Also they changed the whole browser system to a floating window. Basically if you often search for patches and tags then this is a good upgrade. If you’re like me though who reaches for particular instruments/devices as part of your workflow this upgrade is a downgrade.
They also switched places for a bunch of stuff like the tool window.
You should definitely look at Reason Studios video on R13 workflow before you make up your mind.

I’d do it solely for the hi-res feature alone. Once you’ve experienced zoomed-in Reason, there’s no going back to those tiny, fiddly devices. It looks awesome and makes working with the rack a dream.
The mixer looks great also, but I do find the sequencer annoying when zoomed in (at least at 240%) but I deal with it. Individual zoom levels for each window would be amazing but I’m not holding out for that.
Either way, for me that single feature was a game changer and something I’d wanted in Reason since R1.

How do you zoom Toki? I've not found a perfect way yet.

Hey Bitley, to be clear I am referring to the application zoom in the options menu.
I mainly keep this at 240% as this works great for rack and mostly the mixer. Once things get busy in the sequencer I tend to drop back to 180%.
Now, while writing this I decided to jump into Reason and make another attempt at assigning shortcut keys for the zoom levels to F keys on Mac, and I’m totally buzzing as I’ve cracked it!
In Settings>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>App Shortcuts, simply add Reason 13 as your app and the Menu Title is as simple as typing the zoom level and assigning a key. No need to enter sub menus! ♂️
I now have 100% F13, 180% F14, 240% F15. Game changer!
I think my largest display is 24”. Can’t remember what res I’m on maybe 1980 x 1080. The sequencer is quite cramped at max zoom and things start to disappear from the transport bar. Previously I was in and out of the application zoom menu but now this is resolved, I’m a much happier Reason user.
One other thing I have noticed is that in a recent R13 update, it’s no longer necessary to return to 100% zoom in order to maximise all of your windows. This is now possible at any zoom level. R13 also seems to better remember zoom levels and window placement.
When you say you haven’t found the perfect way yet, what is it you do?

Ah great so there it was On mac there's a zoom possibility using scroll mouse and shift or what you prefer, just upgraded to 13 on a newer PC so I hadn't figured it out yet but I remember trying that on the R12 beta many moons ago Thank you!
As for favourites list it's right there, what am I missing?

I think the scroll + shift is just a sequencer timeline zoom, it doesn’t actually zoom the entire application window. If you check out the options menu and application zoom, you’ll find that mega zoom. That’s the bad boy I’m talking about. Life size racks, in your face. Better yet, just get your favourite zoom levels assigned straight to FKeys.bitley wrote: ↑30 Nov 2024Ah great so there it was On mac there's a zoom possibility using scroll mouse and shift or what you prefer, just upgraded to 13 on a newer PC so I hadn't figured it out yet but I remember trying that on the R12 beta many moons ago Thank you!

Not for devices, just for patches. They removed that function. This has been adressed many times before. And apparently I'm not he only one who's bothered by it.
Might not be a big deal for some, but I've shaped my workflow around having my favorite devices in my own chosen categories.
This workflow is much more visual, being able to see all devices. In R13 it's much more text based. Not my thing.
