Reason no longer has a DX-7 emulation. All while FM is making a big comeback (Korg OpSix anyone). Algoritm is agreat synthesizer, but it is no DX emulation. To fill this void this in style, a DX-1 RE would do the trick and generate a whole lot of marketing attention for Reason Studios.

We have cowbells, claps and drums ... what we need is "More Squeaky Toys" (polyphonic of course)... needed and sadly missing

Please god no! I really do not understand the draw of that synth or FM in general. DX was a nightmare to program and the results were not worth the time consumed and the sounds that came out of that monstrosity was like a barrel of cats being drowned mostly

I think with Algoritm and options like Dexed existing, they will continue to point users to those options.

Since PX7 isn't sample-based, I suppose that means it would be ok to sample it and create patches to share? Maybe it could be fun to create a community ReFill of sampled PX7 patches? Even just using Mimic and single samples has pretty good results.

I'm hoping for some physical modelling instrument like Friktion, but for something else, maybe for wind instrument type of sounds, like flutes and stuff.

I don't think it's likely they'll make any Thor 2. As far I remember they made Europa for that. A modern big all rounder synth.
I don't see them doing another FM synth either. Algoritm is still fairly new and covers a lot of ground in the FM department.
For retro stuff they already have the layers synths.
Nah it's gotta be something new.

A dedicated drum synth that is not sample based would be pretty cool too.

I think there should be an update to kong since it’s technically a drum synth with the modeling modules. A few more bells and whistles wouldn’t hurt.

Agreed - Kong 2 would be awesome, and I'd be especially excited for physically modeled hi-hats and cymbals. Strikes me as something we're more likely to see (if at all) in a future Reason version rather than as an RE, though.

Personally I'd like to see something along the lines of Iris 2

I hope it's a Minimoog knockoff because there aren't enough Minimoog knockoffs.
Actually...an updated monotone, with a proper moog aesthetic/knobs, a third oscillator, moar cv options on the back, and noise as a modulation source.

Would be quite welcome.

I'd love to see some good (possibly AI based) vocal synth like modern versions of Vocaloid but with the ease of use typical for Reason. But to have it really well integrated it would need to also extend the sequencer with lyrics tracks, which would be impossible for an RE.

FM is versatile. Most sounds on the Mega Drive are a result of its FM synthesis.

The Yamaha Montage/MODX range give a good demonstration of what modern FM synthesis can do.

And while the DX was difficult to program, it was capable of creating really good textures to layer over other sounds.

Back in the day, the critique was that the DX7 didn't sound 'as fat' as a Juno6 (or Jupiter 8 or whatever), mainly because it lacked a built-in chorus. The reality is that a DX7 sounds way better than a Juno6 when you compare them with the Juno's chorus switched off. When you put a good chorus on a DX7, it smokes just about every other big flagship synth from that era. I sold my DX7 long ago, but I still have the Boss chorus pedal lying around, that I always paired it with. And it being hard to program is a myth, it is the result of the large number of parameters the DX7 has, which makes it so powerful. Bottom-line, a DX7 can do every sound that an analog synth can do, but not the other way around.

The only reason I suggested this, is because a real DX7 emulation is one of the very few things that is currently missing in Reason, for those that don't have PX7. I do have PX7 myself, and two of those in a combinator is effectively a DX1, so I'm good :puf_bigsmile:

Hey that's fair enough, I've just never got on with or enjoyed the sounds that come out of the DX7. I used to have one and tried many times to get to like it but it ended up gathering dust and I sold it real cheap with no regrets.

I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. I have that with wavetable synthesis. I do like the sounds it can make, but don't really like the sound design experience with it. I got into FM synthesis the day that the DX7 was released to the market (I pre-ordered, and got one of the first 300 that were shipped here). So, I basically grew up with it. The DX7 was the centerpiece of my live rig for decades, and I learned to program it pretty well.

I'd take a version of friktion made for brass.

No, But Ive got the TAL and the Softube ones.
Early 90s I was in Wales on an archeological dig and found a music shop in the town. Had a Juno 60 I my hands for £100 but decided against it because I couldn’t be bothered lugging it in the train back to Glasgow. Almost as bad as passing up a 303 for £40 in the 80s. Also as bad as my friend selling his dad’s Moog for £20 to buy a crap bass guitar.

I do you one better, or should I say worse.... I owned a Teisco 110F and I GAVE IT AWAY  Looking back at this stupidity, taking into account they were already pretty rare back then (I'm talking nineties here), every now and then I'm still wondering how I could be such an idiot.

Don't forget that Robotic Bean developer is the part of RS team now, so I'll bet on something related to this fact. In case if it's true and it's instrument, it may be something physical modelling and I don't expect much back panel CV possibilities 😁
If it's an utility I'll always hope for combinator update with dynamic CV inpits amount.
