Its quite cheap ATM, but also old and how does it compare to Algorithm or F'em?

I can't give you a comparison but, speaking as someone who has no F'em idea how to program FM from scratch I always reach for FM8 over any other, because I know it well and because it has shedloads of presets and a great tagged browser to sort them.

If you are into FM it's hard to go wrong at that price.

FM8 can accept System Exclusive Data (preset parameters) from Yamaha's DX7, DX7II and DX200 synthesizers and convert the sound to its own parameter format. Similar to what PX7 could do with https://www.reasonstudios.com/dx7-px7-converter/ -- so It's convient to own if you are sitting on a lot of FM sounds in your archive. The user interface on FM8 is also very good and has great features. Great price that -- 10$.

Reason 12, Ableton Live 10 Suite, Roland Cloud, Arturia V9, Korg Legacy 3, Soundtoys 5, Waves Mercury, Sonic Charge Bundle, N.I.: Massive, Reaktor 6, FM8. + a lot of Hardware. Windows 7/10.

Sure, like Dexed as well. But design aint the same. Some might find FM8 better for their workflow. The FM matrix on FM8 is very powerful. I own Dexed, PX7 and FM8 and I would say FM8 is much better designed than Dexed. But that's just my opinion. There should be tons of videos, tutorials out there for FM8 so people could decide for themselves :) Dexed is of course free.

I'm having this.
FM8 has a great interface for exploring FM, a wealth of tutorials and knowledge, and at this price? Why wouldn't you?

Speaking of Dexed, I'm surprised no-one has done a Combi 2 version of it.

FM is not technically 'old', and FM8 does it quite well. I wish it was black and yellow like FM7. Matrix or grid like interfaces are not too inspiring for me, especially when grey/silver all over.
Get it, or buy two Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino instead?

Did you count the number of knobs on the Dexed interface?

I think you can do two operators before running out of Combi-2 controls :puf_bigsmile:

Talking about Tracktion F'em... it's currently $29 at Audio Deluxe, so in the same sale price zone as FM8....

From what I've read... F'em is the best out of all of them.

True, but that's not really the point of Combis. They are meant to hide the details and give you a handful of controls for the most important stuff. You are still free to delve into the details if you want. Anyhow, I'm not massively fussed because I have not got access to Combi 2 still being an eleven-er. It just seems an obvious VST to Combify.

Thanks danc appreciate you mentioning this.

Trialled it when released but it had a stupid time frame for the release deal of like 3 days. Liked it but no way I was paying Β£179. Β£25 is much more palatable.

One of the great things we do with combi-2 is to wrap VST plugins and make them look and (somewhat) behave like a Rack extension. In those cases, you want/need enough controls to emulate the user interface of the VST.

But of course, you can do as you suggest, and build something more unique. In fact, you gave me an idea here: I'm thinking for a while now about something like that based on FM synthesis, and I was looking to use Algoritm inside, but if I use Dexed, then it can be a free for all

I'd recommend getting it, even if only for the amazing radomizing fucntion in it... Who knows what fantastic sounds you'll come up with... and for only $10... you really can't lose.

I wonder if this means NI have a new FM synth on the horizon - a Massive X to FM8's Massive?

Thanks for your comments. I added to my few synths. In worst case it is a patch lib with 1200 patches for 12 bucks.

Sounds great. Great patches. Not too difficult to program. And you can use it as a standalone fx

But incredible tiny UI

Thanks :). Yeah I wondered about the fx section. I’ll give it a go.

I tried this back when everybody was saying how much better it was than other FM synths, but it didn't really click with me. For $10, I might pick it up for the presets, but I may wait to see if the Plugin Boutique freebie changes by September 6. Not sure I'd use the Nugen Audio bundle.

[EDIT] Looks like the Nugen Audio Focus Elements Bundle offer will end August 31, so I guess there will be something different before the FM8 sale ends.

The NI offer is in until September 6th so you can wait until then and see what freebie PB offers for September.
Edit: Sorry, I think that’s what you just said.
