Yeah if there was anything to help people have some perspective when arguing that Apple products are way overpriced... 😂

You can get this...or for the same price you can get a Mac Studio or MacBook Pro. You can spend less and get a Mac Mini, MacBook Air, or iPad and do more with those.

I spent less for my MacBook Air and iPad Mini combined than the cost of this 🤯

And this is just the starting price. Remember that the original OP-1 was $899 and then had a price hike to $1299.

That's a great point. I mean, at the end of the day we're talking mobile groove boxes that get you away from your computer, but... man - that price is hard to swallow. Did NOT think a new OP-1 would debut at $2000 USD.

I've got a few pocket operators and they're pretty fun, and I have a buddy with the original OP-1 and an OP-Z and he loves them, but I'm not sure I'll ever understand the hype. These things just don't click with me and I'd rather have more capable or more distinctive (and do, consequently).

Any fans of these things out here who'd like to explain what it is about them?

Here's an interesting takeaway: Jeremy at Red Means Recording used to do a metric ton of OP-1 YouTube videos - the guy is a master on the OP-1. But he stopped, because what he found was that the OP-1 forces you into a very specific genre of music with a very specific sound, and he got tired of sounding like all of the other OP-1 users out there. So he stopped.

I'm not sure what else the "Field" will bring to the table that will expand that, but I'm sure we'll have another decade of videos to peruse. But in the 12 years since the original came out, the competition has gotten a lot stronger and there are much better options out there, IMHO.

I'd rather use my old ipad Air with Korg Gadget, Nanokey and NanoKontrol Studio controllers.
2,000 monetary units is a cash grab for what it is, just think of the gear you could buy with that.

Yes exactly!

And all of that brand new today is less than half the price of this

I remember when the previous OP-1 was $899. I was intrigued by it, but even $899 was too much.

Then when the OP-1 was out of stock and out of production, people starting selling them second-hand for ridiculous prices. So then TE saw that and instead of fixing it when they started production again, they thought they might as well try to make that money and raised the price to $1299. I think I saw some explanation about the cost of components, but I mean, there's no way it's that expensive to make. And now $2000...

I honestly don’t see the appeal of these at all… but $2000? Even more so. It’s such a simple product you can only do but so much with unless I’m missing something.

Well I'm a big fan of gadgets. But gadgets are gadgets. I have a few of the pocket operators.

I would consider $499 to be the highest reasonable price for something like this and I might even consider it at that price.

For that price, this better come with 25 grams of coke hidden in the box.

Oh... there it is.

Insane pricing, although it does make the new Oberheim OB-X8 look affordable. So, every cloud ........

Or 4 - count them - FOUR - of Roland’s new SP-404 MKII’s. Man.. just watched the Midlife Synthesist’s take on it. Even he pointed out Teenage Engineering’s doing a massive disservice to their fans and customers. TE also snubbed Andrew Huang and Jeremy at Red Means Recording. These three YouTubers are the reason why much of the western world even gives two craps about the original OP-1.

Hey Teenage Engineering:

It's hard to believe that the company has not gone out of business yet, it's only a matter of time.

Jeesh...

I'd be interested if there was a return policy for the old OP-1....
1.900-1400=500... For the upgrade...

Not gonna happen.

Why??
They are not vaporwavers...
I'd never buy the field mixer at that price, but the idea is supercool....

Behringer can not copy TE. The day Behringer copy a TE, it could fail.
Otherwise they will always be niche and DJ's still has more money than
most of producers....

10 years old I can still sell my OP-1 for 1.200 noproblem...

With any other company I'd assume they were planning to heavily discount it but with TE you just don't know. Maybe they are convinced it will sell well at that price. It will be interesting to read the reviews.

I don't think Teenage Engineering will go out of business, per say... but an acquisition by a company (or investment group) with deeper pockets is certainly in the cards. They're a niche company with only a few products that one could consider "high volume" (their Pocket Operator line), and even those have an extremely niche customer base. Some of their stuff is downright weird niche (their speakers), and the new TX mixer is hilariously overpriced for the products it is meant for.

Teenage Engineering are as much a lifestyle/design company as they are music gear company. They're trying to be the Apple of the music industry - and in some ways they succeed. But hundreds of millions of people buy cellphones almost every year. Niche music gear? Not so much. So, I absolutely expect them to sell to the highest bidder at some point. We never thought it would happen to Propellerhead, yet here we are. Swedish companies aren't stupid.
