In the spirit of cloning old machines, Roland is doing the same.
Expensive hardware clones for the few, vs cheaper clones of long gone expensive machines for the everyday dreamer. Roland offers the cloud, so you don't have to own the hardware, which is really cool for those who can't tell the difference between analog and digital, or just don't care.
Yeah I don't see how that's the same at all, I'm afraid. Roland literally invented their take on the synth, and decades later are releasing an updated take (fun fact: this is not the first time Roland has released updated takes on their classic gear - they were doing it back when Uli was reverse engineering Mackie mixers and controllers to pass off as original Behringer products). So again, Behringer are copying the giants as always.

Roland's updated take is stuck in a loop, a loop called Roland Cloud and Zen Core. Feels like.

I cancelled my Roland Cloud account. I did end up getting perpetual licenses for the Juno-106, Jupiter-8, JX3P, and SH-101 though. Their ACB stuff is choice.

I do understand that it's fashionable to hate the Behringer way but Roland are guilty of treading water and finding ways to repackage the same old stuff. Like many of the "old names" I think they have lost their mojo. The exciting synths are coming from new players with fresh ideas.

But the X will certainly sell.

Behringer are innovating. They might be copying old products but bringing them to consumers at the great price points is both disruptive and innovating.

Remember when the IBM XT and AT personal computer clones started arriving in the late 80s. Cheap rip-offs, not the real deal, won't be as reliable as a genuine IBM, morally wrong, etc.
And when AMD started creating CPUs that were basically Intel replacements. The same discrediting and hand wringing.

We'd all have to say the PC clones and Intel clone all created competitive tension that benefited consumers, fostered innovation, and ultimately companies like Behringer are doing the same.

Don’t get me wrong - I feel the products Behringer are bringing to market are brilliant, innovative, and a service to musicians the world over. I’m just disgusted by Uli Behringer and don’t feel he’s been an honest person for how he got there.

Bah - I’ll raise you one Softube Model 84 which is noticeably better than TAL’s offering. :puf_bigsmile:

Woah! The Softube synth sounds amazing!! Maybe even nicer than the System 8 Juno plugout.

Sound, accuracy in emulation, and GUI as far as I can tell. Not concerned about Softube people (for reference: see Uli Behringer).

Right. I thought TAL were about as close is it got. I’ll maybe demo the ST one. What about Cherry Audio?

I haven't checked that one out - let me know if you do! I'm about up to my elbows with Juno 106 stuff right now, so I think I'm good. Roland's own ACB version that I have on my System-8 (and its desktop VST counterpart) gets the job done for me, in all honesty. The Juno-X is really just a GAS thing that I'm struggling with - plus - I do sort of miss my old vintage Juno.

Get a demo of the Softube one and try this next to the TAL one.

Open filter, sawtooth waveform only, play a sound on both VST's and slowly bring in the sub oscillator. The difference is immediate and it's quite obvious which one is closer to the hardware.

I've said it before. The Softube Juno is a Juno. It sounds exactly like the hardware. It's the best hardware emulator that I've heard.

I love how the thread has evolved into what's the best Juno VST, including other Roland products, instead of

Yeah, it looks great. It's a shame you can't customise the "standard" header part of a combi. The Editor and Devices buttons stick out like a sore thumb.

A good vid of the synth. It does look gorgeous and certainly sounds like a Juno.

That’s a great deep dive. I know a lot of users are bewildered at the X-series having built-in speakers, thinking it’s not a “pro” feature. If you FF to the 38:51 spot in the video, there’s a great explanation why Roland put speakers on the Juno-X (and Jupiter-X).

Basically, in 1981, Roland engineers wanted to put speakers in the Jupiter 8, because the thinking was - every acoustic instrument in a studio can be picked up and played, and it should make noise. A guitar. Drums. A sax - even an electric guitar without any amp can be “heard”. They felt synths should be no different. But the technology wasn’t there yet, so they didn’t (it wasn’t until later Juno models that they finally did).

From that perspective, I totally agree - and (if I can digress a bit) having an MPC as an instrument with built-in speakers that just “makes noise” without anything but turning it on is pretty useful - not to mention it’s great for feedback and resonance when you’re on-stage and want to hear it from where you’re standing. Roland were smart to include them.

Yeah. I agree. Just take it anywhere and power it and you're away. Handy for a quick doodle. You never know when inspiration can strike.

Time to put some other gear up for sale to pay for it - LOL!!! It's a pre-order, and I'm told I have at least a month before it will ship.

Indeed, for my next synth I'm looking seriously at the Super 6 (as an old Roland fan boy). My latest synth is also the first release from a new company, ASM's HydraSynth.
These "new kids" are rocking it out of the ball park IMO.

Right, downloaded the Cherry Audio demo. PUt it side by side with the TAL and compared the Juno Factory Soundbanks. Now maybe I'm doing something wrong but they sounded completely different. I mean different sounds. Harpsichord 1 vs Harpsichord 1. Totally different etc...
So no idea.

Congratulations man! What a buy! It sounds lovely really. You're gonna have a lot a fun!

I was playing the new Fantom-0 today, which sounds amazing and seems like a great tool to create. I was thinking of getting the big Fantom but i liked the Fantom-0 so much that i'm kinda of in doubt. Great workflow all around.. Also, brought home a brand new JD-08 to accompany my recently acquired SE-02, TR8s and the TB3. Gonna have a party here soon!

Would be great to create some new custom combinators for the boutiques. Has anyone ventured into that yet?
