I'd go one step further and think the manuals should have been bundled into the RE download so they could then directly be opened from within Reason.

Yep, I've often thought it was an odd omission. Every RE should have a built-in manual / help file.

I hate built-in helps. Never met a program that made using it convenient. As a developer I also hate embedding help into programs. A manual should be a standalone book in PDF or HTML.

A bundled .pdf or HTML file included in the RE download (and a quicklink from within Reason) would have been OK. But as said: Another missed opportunity.
