I've tried to do things differently with this track. Used many REs that have collected dust for some time or that hardly hadn't been used at all. Also most things in this track are based on Player generated material. So basically the main task was to bring all these somewhat randomized things that the players gave me and try to put it together in some way that makes sense.

I'm always impressed how good your mixes are. How you distribute the elements of a track in the Stereo field. This time again - good job!

Thanks. I think my first experience with computers was when my older brother got an Amiga 500. Playing games on that thing was definitely part of my childhood.

Thanks. Yeah it was fun experimenting with new things, but it was also quite hard to actually make some sort of arrangement for this, to turn it into a finished track. It's not like it has a clear chorus or anything. The bassline is pretty much constant, the foundation of the track, with some weird stuff added on top of that.

Thanks. Interesting to hear as I often feel quite uncertain on how to place things in the stereo field. I often tend to have quite monoish mixes due to mono compatibility.Kuranes2021 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022I'm always impressed how good your mixes are. I am definitely in the same camp as Benedict with regard to story, and FWIW I didn't feel any need to complain about the lack thereof here. Maybe it was because it was so assertively quirky that I was forced to accept it on its own terms. I wonder what Benedict would say, but he's apparently taken himself offline.TritoneAddiction wrote: ↑20 Jan 2022Thanks. I'm sure there's a lot of merit to the whole "telling a story" perspective when creating music. But more often than not I don't personally view it like that when making or listening to music. Maybe I get too hung up on the word "story" and take it too literally. If I remember correctly Benedict had a pretty encompassing take on what "telling a story" could mean.integerpoet wrote: ↑20 Jan 2022I am definitely in the same camp as Benedict with regard to story, and FWIW I didn't feel any need to complain about the lack thereof here. For me I'm typically looking for a particular vibe, feeling, image or energy. If those things goes under the umbrella of "story" then fine, but I don't look at it that way.
I remember watching an old video with Benedict where he explained the topic and his approach. Even though it made sense it still wasn't an approach I identified with.

"Story" doesn't need to be taken in exactly the same way one would mean with a textual narrative. I think it works better if you think about finer-grained elements of story, such as character development: what does each voice have to say, how does that evolve, and why? If your muse tells you to focus on progressing through scenes, you might end up using words like "feeling" or "image", but that doesn't mean you're not telling a story. Also, it's legit for different genres to emphasize different aspects of story. Or, ultimately, everything is legit, including flipping the bird to story, but I think that makes it more difficult to be engaging.TritoneAddiction wrote: ↑21 Jan 2022I'm sure there's a lot of merit to the whole "telling a story" perspective when creating music. Sounds like something worth finding even though Benedict won't be able to comment here. But also those of us who don't yet have degrees in composition could just go get them. Easy peasy, right?I remember watching an old video with Benedict where he explained the topic and his approach. Even though it made sense it still wasn't an approach I identified with.

I believe this is the video I was talking about. I don't think I watched the whole video. It's pretty long. But there's probably some good stuff in there.integerpoet wrote: ↑21 Jan 2022Sounds like something worth finding even though Benedict won't be able to comment here.
