"I use Reason" reaction

Yeah, pretty much like so. Reason 12 is million times more powerful, than what it used to be. I'd even say, that there's no excuse anymore to blame Reason, for not being able to make hit-music.
One could replace all the stocks with any REs or VSTs now. The bottlenecks have become different - regarding bad music. A superb music in the quality-wise is possible.

Re or VST has never been what makes hit music it's the person making the music that makes the hits.

It has never been what instrument is used but the person playing it.
The DAW is not making any hits except maybe now the player in reason will make a hit that the "creator" can't recreate if he mistakenly deletes it

I think one cause of the unenthusiastic reactions to Reason has been the authorization system Propellerhead used to prevent piracy. Reason has basically been uncrackable for over a decade, whereas many of the other DAWs were easily cracked and shared. This allowed every broke 15-year-old to dip their toes into music production, which in turn flooded YouTube with tutorials and demonstrations of those DAWs, creating vibrant online communities around those platforms. Now those guys are 25, and they love Ableton and FL Studio and speak the same language.

We have a community around Reason here, but this forum is the biggest, the average age here is pretty high, and posts to the music sub-forum don’t get much engagement. I think that’s why RS has been trying to gear Reason toward younger audiences. Most promo material features trap or EDM and highlights Reason’s ability to deliver immediate results, a departure from the technical James Bernard-era immersive patching they used to feature. Props had every right to make Reason secure, but I suspect one unintended consequence is the blank stares I get when I tell other guys I use Reason. We’re kind of on an island.

Well Doh! But all the REs and VSTs brought all kinds of instruments and effects that made it a lot easier. You can't turn Malström to sound like Antidote as example. Some DAW users can't allow compromises in the sound-quality.

All most beats need are good enough instrument sounds, a synth and effects (which Reason has in abundance).

This stigma, has been connected with all digital music making, and more harshly with all "in the box" music making solutions since these things began to exist. For Reason, the hatred started to grow toward it in 2000; it was nothing to do with features, or sound quality, it was pure confirmation bias among hardware workstation users. It doesn't matter how much you try and educate people, either - I remember all the MPC owners saying that the MPC grooves just had something more and better, vibe wise than what ReGroove was capable of; which was roughly equivalent to a guy with a grenade laughing at a guy with nuclear weapons, but there was just no way of explaining this to them.

From my experience talking with DAW musicians most of the time when I get that reaction I just have to ask a few questions to figured they have either never worked with Reason before or have and couldn't figure it out. But once I sit side by side with them and go feature for feature, as far as the features they actually USE, it's usually either obscure feature #31 that they really don't use or the "REASON SOUND" that none have been able to articulate. Of course this excludes those who don't like/use it because they need a specific DAW for work: i.e. Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Nuendo etc...

I also agree with the point stated earlier. I have been one of the few people who has actually owned the DAW being used when they started making music. Most that I've met, pro and hobbyist, started on a cracked version of usually Live or FL. So paying for something like Reason, esp before RE's or even audio recording, just wasn't even an idea when those were just a few clicks away for free.

That's Drake's father, Dennis Graham! Dennis is also the brother of Larry Graham, the bassist from Sly & The Family Stone. Very musical family.

Drake didn't sound disappointed to me, I just heard, "oh, Reason". A bunch of his producers use it and a bunch of his biggest songs are made in Reason, so I'm not sure why he'd be disappointed. That said, we thought the reaction was kinda funny too and knew it could be interpreted in a bunch of different ways, hence why we shared it

Well ... if you were a budding talented musician who happened to have an uncle or a close family friend who had resources and connections, you're probably going to get easy access.

What ends up happening is that you quickly end up with tightly knit networks across the generations.

Things might change now that it's much more accessible, but even with a more level playing field, those connections make a huge difference.

Everytime (almost) without fail when someone asks me what I use to make music they're flabbergasted when I say Reason. Mostly because they didn't know it was still an active platform or just remember it around version 1 or 2 when it was just used to make techno/acid beats in.
