How good is your hearing?
Just found this interesting little test to see how good your hearing is for your age, pretty handy for us people dealing with sound and frequency all the time. Seems I'm around 4 years out so all that loud blasting acid house and techno during my youth has done some damage I guess?
I have mine checked sort of regular for diving. I know it’s crap.
Walkman generation etc.
I think I cut off around 8k.

11 here. Not too bad I guess for a 50 year old with one ear.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit.
I also suffered a strange head injury that left me w some kind of problem.
For weeks after I had bad tinnitus, cotton ear, hyperacusis (not sure about the spelling there) and my hearing has never been perfect since.
So maybe it wasn’t all the Walkman damage. It’s hard to say.
But I’d love to have perfect hearing again. To hear something more like silence again.
Hey ho.

Can anybody even hear the audio on the video? Is this some kind of sick joke?
Cranking up the volume.... I got nothing!
My dog, on the other hand.... GOING NUTS!
I cut of around 11 kHz..... at 4Khz I lost around 40 dB.... Bad, but he I'm nearing the 60 as I get 57 this winter and worked in loud noise the most of my life.
Greetings from Miyaru.

The original video might have gone to 21k, but I suppose youtube simply cuts everything above 16k.
Edit:
To test your frequency cut-off you can also use websites like these:

I can't speak for other countries but here in the UK you can get a free proper hearing test at a number of different retailers. I did mine at Boots. The results were sufficiently bad to justify their more detailed test. So I now know how knackered my hearing is and at what frequencies. They wanted to sell me hearing aids but I just took their graphs and applied the inverse curve to my listening EQ. My mixes are still on the decent side of average and I have (younger) friends who can do the final polish. I do pretty well with music but give me a softly spoken woman with a covid face mask on and I really struggle to make out all of the consonants. Sometimes I feel old...jam-s wrote: ↑24 Nov 2021The original video might have gone to 21k, but I suppose youtube simply cuts everything above 16k.

Yep I suspect youtubes video/audio encoding is the culprit.jam-s wrote: ↑24 Nov 2021The original video might have gone to 21k, but I suppose youtube simply cuts everything above 16k.

These dedicated websites work way better and the test signal remains audible beyond any of the youtube videos I checked.
Satisfyingly it's more like 9k!
That's about when my tinitus blots everything out.
Generally not too much going on up there anyway.
That's what I tell myself...

You should make this a poll. I'm curious what everyone has. Is 9k that bad? At 48 (nearly)?

Tried the https://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ with a Genelec 8330A stereo pair & AKG K271 Studio headphones. The upper end of my hearing range got a bit difficult to discern because the laptop decided to have a fan freakout but I managed to discern (not really hear) tones up to 15.5k (volume at around 50%). It was more like a thing or pressure that you could feel when I rotated my head (one or the other ear more towards the speakers). What else... the headphones petered out a bit earlier. Glad that I can hear those high frequencies even though I do have tinnitus and hearing loss that makes it difficult at times to discern what people are saying in noisy environments (bars, etc.).
That actually makes me wonder about a thing, I have misophonia and I can hear really well all kinds of small higher pitch scratchy or wet/smacking noises that tend to irritate me, this, even when I am listening to loud music from the monitors. For example, my dog tends to smack her lips, etc. and that sound reaches me in almost a magical way (her bed is several meters away behind a sofa). Other stuff too but it really annoys the fuck out of me.

I also get my hearing checked regularly, as I've been more prone to Otitis in the last 6 years.
To my knowledge, normal hearing tests are focused on functional hearing, so most of them test simple tones up to 8 kHz.
I have a little drop at 4 kHz on the right ear, then its normal up to the max of the test (8K). That video on a very bad room and laptop stops making noise at 15 kHz. The last time i did this test i would hear stuff until 16 kHz, but then again... Time goes by!

I also lost it at just the cusp of 13k, which puts me a bit better than their age listing. Although, I wasn't listening with headphones and I'm not sure what the upper range of these speakers are. Still, I get regular hearing tests at work and I'm aware of a certain notch in my frequency range, though they tell me it's "within normal for my age bracket".
I've often wondered, considering how I've worked in environments with loud machinery, whether my enjoyment of music styles that many consider "noise" has anything to do with how little all the workplace noise and loud music I've listened to for decades has damaged my hearing compared to others. I've seen the test results from co-workers and I've seen folks younger than me with far worse hearing - either their hobbies are much louder or I'm some kind of noise-resistant freak.

Actually I wonder about this.
I can hear the signal until it blends w my tinnitus. So it may be that I can hear up there ok but I need something i can differentiate from the tinnitus sound. Which fluctuates.
