Plug-in capitalism
Almost everything you own has been financed [in the Western World] by Vanguard, or BlackRock, or both. Even the so called counterculture revolutions.
"Musicians need more recourse to seize their means of production."
Can this writer do the same with its tool, like with their expensive laptop computer they used to write articles like this?
This is a very specific problem for musicians with a good credit card, good high speed internet access, and a need for billions of presets they will never use, forever attached to their usb controllers.
Maybe this is the way to go, if we are willing to pay for it? Most can't afford their beautiful machines. A Matriarch should last decades, but most rather buy cheap toys, or go 100% virtual.

The industry will March on one way or t’other. But the individual maker is precariously perched and that situation is deepening I think.
Economics of it are a mess and we’ve got very little control over our own eco systems.
How can a plug-in company survive when it’s users demand free updates to pull online with os updates. For example. Etc.
Personally I’ve always taken the stance that I want to keep my rig ready for off line zombie apocalypse time. So my last move will leave me with a comp that can at least make music. But that can’t last forever.
At the mo I couldn’t afford to start this shit from scratch. I can’t even afford a new computer. If anything breaks I’m just done. And I get paid for this stuff. Music production and sound design.
So now my final move is looking more like jack it in and at least I can listen to music.
I’m paranoid. I know it. My comp is fine. But I don’t like working in a landscape like this.

Also his point about stream lining the user experience translating into skilled revenue lost to other sectors is important.
We’ve seen that everywhere though.
Not just robotics and AI but screws. No joke. Paint rollers. People that made nails just got early retirement at one point.
And so forth.
All too common.

An interesting article - you're unlikely to see Horkheimer and Adorno referenced In Music Radar mag lol
