Is Audiomatic Tape setting a good emulation?
Hi,
I'm wondering how good is Audiomatic tape emulation setting to simulate warmth and all that jazz expected from that kind of device.
Is there any better alternatives in the RE format ?
Thanks !

It's as good as your ears tell you it is. Have you tried it? What do you think about it? I quite like Audiomatic Tape setting. One thing about Audiomatic, though, is it is rather limited on adjustments; what you hear is pretty much what you get with a small variation from the transform knob (and to a lesser degree the wet/dry, gain and volume knobs).
Don't forget the modular magic that is the Reason rack. You can add other elements to Audiomatic... more hiss or color, add some other devices. Fun fact: All the effects used to create Audiomatic were built from stock devices already found inside Reason.

What sound are you looking for?
Wobbling: The Echo, Polar
LoFi: Any filter, EQ, Scream4:Decimate
Compression: Scream4:Tape, Pulverizer
Noise: Audiomatic, Thor, Subtractor, ...
Destruction: Pulverizer, Scream4, Synchronious, ...
...
If you want to invest in RE, look out for Pitch-Shifters, Noise-Generators, Filters, EQs, Compressors, or directly tape if you still miss that whatever Mojo:

Hi,
my "go to" Tape emulation in the RE format is UMPF RETRO. By routing any audio signal of your desire into UMPF RETRO's audio input and adjusting its Tape parameters to your liking, the outcome won't disappoint you, I suppose.
"A good emulation". Do we know what type of tape emulation it is? 1/2"? 1/4"? Microcassette, etc? It would be nice to know what emulates what in Reason in general as far as tape and their bias.
Not knowing is part of the magick maybe.

That could be a really fun Combinator project - recreate the Audiomatic patches as individual combi's with more adjustable parameters.

What d'you mean by Decimate on Scream 4 or were you referring to another Re/VST?
Reason Studio's 11.3 / Cockos Reaper 6.82 / Cakewalk By Bandlab / Orion 8.6

I'm working on a Combi2 version of the Tape preset in Audiomatic, which was one of my contributions to the device. And fun fact: there was a custom device that was used to create the patches.

I meant Digital, sorry.Creativemind wrote: ↑04 Oct 2021What d'you mean by Decimate on Scream 4 or were you referring to another Re/VST?

It would be very cool if they introduced an easter egg that removed from the front panel to expose more knobs you could adjust.
Or maybe a text style editor on the display that you could scroll through for tweaking parameters. Sort of like Synplant, in the sense that the main UI remains the central focus by being the most inviting, and the further parameters you can adjust feel in a way like a hidden way to hack the sound.

It's decent, there are definitely a lot better options out there, but it does add a little Mojo to the signal.
Yeah, I really like this idea. I believe Selig has already shared his contributions to Audiomatic here on RT (but built with stock devices). I think TAPE was one of his, IIRC.
EDIT: I had this page loaded from reading it earlier today. When I posted this comment, I hadn't yet read the most recent comments. Looks like my memory served me well: Giles did create TAPE.
I need some warmth saturation to improve strings and other orchestral sampled instruments, so nothing that "destroy" or alter the nature of the core sound, just tape saturation warmth.... Like U-HE Satin or Abbey Road SaturatorLoque wrote: ↑04 Oct 2021What sound are you looking for?

What do yo recommend for that in RE format ?
Thanks !
You think we should start a thread in the Combi sub? I didn't realize until Selig's post that those patches were user contributed. That's amazing (and it would also be cool to see what that dedicated device he was talking about). I've had a lot of fun over the weekend designing interfaces for the new combi (I made a vulf compressor wrapper) and would love to throw my hat in the ring to help out in terms of UI and design.
I highly recommend my next RE, naturally (seriously), but it's not a tape emulation…sonicbyte wrote: ↑04 Oct 2021I need some warmth saturation to improve strings and other orchestral sampled instruments, so nothing that "destroy" or alter the nature of the core sound, just tape saturation warmth.... I think these days everyone has their own unique (and generally rather fanciful) idea of what tape sounded like. Which means that to borrow from the Aussie classic: "It's a wide open road".
This one may appeal, with its own Combi II skin too

You could have a look at the free saturation knob. It's quite nice to add some "warmth". Beware it is not gain compensated, so you have to turn down the volume when increasing the saturation amount to have a fair comparison. (IIrc there was a combinator that automatically compensates the gain posted somewhere on this forum).sonicbyte wrote: ↑04 Oct 2021

Have a look at Wavesfactory Cassette:

If you want a cleaner sound, my goto tape machine emulation is Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machine:

No VST, though. But really nice sounding plugins.
