Hi all, not quite first post here but nearly.

Been using reason since 2002 but got stuck at version 5 (ah the good old days of reasonstation and reasonfreaks!), recently made the upgrade only a hobbyist with a cheap keyboard and headphones but eager to up the quality a bit.

Recently bought some M-audio monitors, as I realised getting sound perfect in headphones meant it would be rubbish listening everywhere else!

Just wondering if anyone knows of any (preferably paperback) books I can read on the subject of mixing and mastering and any other useful polishing and production techniques that would apply well within the reason 12 environment?

chow!

Kris

I bought one a few years ago that seems like a well rounded guide. And that is:

Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio - Mike Senior

Looking at an Amazon listing for the book, it gets 4.7 stars from over 1,000 reviews, so take that as you will.

I found this one very helpful, especially the illustrations of the concepts.

For mixing, that one from Mike Senior is of great value. Plus it has an amazing assortment of projects for you to mix available online and you don't even need to have the book to get them!

For mastering, I have to say Bob Katz Mastering audio is the bible, imho!

Thanks everyone, it looks like we have a clear consensus!

I did find one aimed at reason 5 on amazon but it only had 2 reviews and it was 1 star and 5 star :/

I'll take a look at this, ultimately for my best projects ill probably top it off with a professional service as I find the authors ear to be a tad biased once time invested, but I do need them to be at a certain standard to do even that! :D

Mixing and mastering are not exclusive to Reason. People were mixing and mastering albums before daws existed and the basis of the craft are the same. One thing that is good about Mike Senior's book is that he doesn't focus much on the DAW itself so you can apply what you learn in any DAW you use.

The same applies for most of Mastering Audio. The book is huge, and again, is more focused on process, context, and not much on this or that tool, this or that plug, this or that daw, as it shouldnt. It's regarded as one of the most important books of its kind.

"Mixing and mastering are not exclusive to Reason"

*faints* really?

I'm not opposed to a non-reason book, but if there was a reason focused book it'd be fantastic because obviously it'd be talking from a perspective of tools I had to hand.

Not essential as I will be looking at the recommendations though it would be a nice to have.

There's not much point in any professional authors doing Reason specific books on mixing and mastering as the skill set is very easily transferable between the real and virtual worlds and although the tools are different the techniques are essential the same.

If you're looking for some handy utility's checkout selig devices( gain & leveler ) both are very handy devices

Thanks for the recommendation - the reviews really rave about it.

I don't have the book, but I watched the videos 3-4 years ago and it was an eye opener for sure.
