It definitely looks like things really went downhill @ Reason 8. Which seems surprising as I recall Mattias saying it was best or fasting selling version ever.

Actually, a couple of months ago - June 13 apparently - I was bored so I checked out the likes/dislikes on major Reason versions(and 9.5):

ver____likes-------dislikes___ratio
R6 __ 1500^^_____032!!____02.1% negative view
R7____1800^^____041!!____02.2%
R8____1100^^____104!!____09.4%
R9____1600^^____462!!____28.8%
R9.5__2400^^____059!!____02.4%
R10___2400^^____149!!____06.2%
R11___2000^^____119!!____05.9%
R+____431^^_____1500!!____3.5:1 negative to positive ratio o_0!!

Looks like R8 started the downhill trend with the like/dislike ratio as well with a quadrupling+ of the negative opinion and a lowering of people even bothering to like.
Big negative view for R9 as well.
But introducing VST in 9.5 brought Reason back to its original low 2% negative view - probably the same % of sad trolls who will always dislike Reason.
The amount of people who liked Reason 9.5 more than doubled from Reason 8. And there were still more likes for 11 than 6 which was arguably a pretty popular version. So maybe its not as bad as the YT views show.

But, yeah, that R+ introduction has really flipped the like/disliked ratio massively.

in fairness though, R+ wasn’t a new version, really, just a new licensing model.

but either way, those view numbers are alarming if accurate

The latest Reason 12 promo videos are so cringey. It seems that the target market is teenagers with ADD who just want a steady stream of shiny new toys and cheesy presets to fool around with. I don't even think that the R+ concept is a horrible idea; maybe that's a good solution for some people. But why is it marketed in such a condescending way?

For instance, with the sound packs, you could show how the presets can be a learning tool for sound designers who want to fully leverage the power of the modular reason rack (with combinators, audio and CV routing, etc.) And you could also place more emphasis on the performance/customization aspect of those presets. Combinator patches are not supposed to be static presets, where the mod wheel just turns up the vibrato or whatever. With the more advanced interface of the new Combinator, patches can be unique instruments/effects in their own right, similar to the instruments in Kontakt, or ensembles in Reaktor.

Or maybe we all got on with making music instead of watching YouTube videos ;)

True enough for your first point.

On the second, I recall someone saying a while ago that You Tube videos that are embedded, in a forum thread like RT, for instance, don't get their views counted for the official YT count anymore. Not sure if that is correct - anyone?

It is pretty awful. The whole 'sounds like you' tag is a pile of nonsense because what it sounds like are a bunch of preset mini refills offered as 'packs' and pigeonholed into arbitrary genres that they suggest you can make a professional song from that will take the world by storm from the comfort of your bedroom at a laptop. Whoever is in charge of marketing needs to have a sit down and word with themselves.

Embeds definitely still push up the view counts, however the way views are counted has changed dramatically over the past decade to combat view and sub boosting bots. The algorithm for serving videos to users has also gone through multiple iterations. Youtube was also much much smaller back in 2007 so I really doubt those numbers are accurate. It just doesn't make any sense.

Maybe older videos have more views because they've been around longer? 🤔 :D

Also, look at all those peaks! It's not like views dropped overall. That might just show that people are much more interested in content than they are into hype and announcement videos.

Also as reference, Ableton Live (which is supposedly vastly more popular?) only has 400k views for its Live 11 announcement video from 9 months ago.

I think YouTube views in general have dropped. People don't sit and watch entire videos to register a view anymore. They see something and then they go to read the info. They watch parts and then they run with that and debate about it online lol.

Agreed this is likely a change in YouTube. Several YouTubers over the years have made comments about their subscribers not seeing their videos and RS has typically not been all that consistent with videos which is important for the Algorithm compared to the earlier years

If you ignore the red line and look at the other data it appears to have been up and down all over the place over the years. But so has the Propellerhead/Reason Studios YouTube content. They have done some really cool video series over the years. In between there has been a lot of videos that are more like just marketing material. People get bored with that stuff, I think more and more over the years. There’s so much content nobody has time for marketing and advertising nonsense. People want material that’s more useful, informal a entertaining. Otherwise they just skip onto the next thing. I’d love to see another Music Making Month type series. That was excellent ….. but a long, long time ago! (10 years already, so video quality sucks!)

i love the 52 weeks of reason series too, i think i watched it a few years after it was originally made and i remember thinking the video quality kinda made it a bit hard to watch at times but the information was solid and well explained. i'd like something like that again. i guess maybe the music making diaries from the last few months might be similar but i havent watched those so maybe i'm actually not as interested?

Yup, for the most part it actually makes pleasant viewing. I can read three important things from this graph - first that on average RS were generally getting increasingly better viewing figures, from 2007-2018, with some "quiet years in 2011 and 2017 - the quiet years are probably due to content droughts. The second one, and the worrying one is that since the start of the pandemic, figures have dropped off heavily - besides just saying that it's COVID related, it's difficult to know what this means exactly. The third is that Reason users are less interested in finding out about the product releases on YouTube - this is fine, with the platform in the shape it is in you just demo whatever you want, and the majority of Reason users have had some seasoning, and thus don't need the tutorials as much. The "panic line" is just the OP having a giggle - or maybe a breakdown.

What would be much more interesting would be to see a smoothed average YouTube views vs the smoothed average TikTok views - in other words how many young 'uns are picking Reason up compared to long term existing users?

Show the stats for the other DAW, or gear of choice next to each other, the same way you did with Reason, so we have a basic point of reference, if you can.

Exactly, with no comparison there isn't much context.

This fits into the 'teenager who wants to be a rockstar / mumble rapper' category and I'm assuming it is where a lot of the money is, and if that is the case, I'm sure RS will be shameless in violently pursuing it.
