Looks awesome, but one question with regards to Ryan's video - the GUI seems really unresponsive (patching is wonky) and weird (he had to drag the mouse through whole screen to get the sliders move 2 centimeters). Hopefully he's demoing it in some internal high-DPI dev tool, rather than in actual Reason? Because it looked much sharper than it will in Reason (I'm at work, so can't play with it right now).

He was indeed working in an internal hi-res dev environment. It felt more important to get nice, crisp graphics so we wouldn't have to update it later. It's WAY smoother in reality.

;) told you so lol

"What a wonderful world"

"What a Wonderful World" is a song written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single, which topped the pop charts in the United Kingdom, though it performed poorly in the United States because Larry Newton, the president of ABC Records, disliked the song and refused to promote it.

I'm one of those who prefer to buy instead of subscribe, takes some pressure off - pressure is the last thing I need. I also think it feels fantastic to actually own it. With subscription you just rent it, it's on loan. People have different opinions about this, understandably. Cold logic might dictate sub cost less over time, but that really depends on how much you actually use it. If it's bought you can use it 5 minutes a month, it won't matter. If you sub, using it 5 minutes a month won't feel so good :p

HOWEVER, if you want every main version, I guess sub could easily be cheaper, especially if you make sure to unsub in inactive periods.

GREAT point. Are these monthly software subscriptions? Why not weekly or hourly pro-rated? If there was an easy infrastructure to temporarily cancel your subscription and the time that you are subscribed was pro-rated, I would consider renting. But most people are inspired at different times of the day, the week, the month, the year and they don't always coincide with the subscription cycles offered by most companies. Maybe crypto, smart contracts and the blockchain will help in the future.

Are you referring to crypto currency?
Or some kind of block chain based time sheet?

I wish I can speak more intelligently about this but I would imagine smart contracts that are time sensitive might be a way to pay for software, only when you use it. Unfortunately, the current monthly system for most subscription based software doesn't allow for down time when you aren't using the software to create music in any given month. Furthermore inspiration and creativity runs on its own schedule for most people. But If something like this were implemented, a user would only need to keep an eye on what the rate per minute or per hour, week, month etc

That sounds awful. Right in the middle of your creative flow a message pops up and demands you put another 50p in the meter to continue. BOOM! Muse gone.

Sounds fine, it would probably only come up if there's something wrong with your card. So, once every few years if ever?

I agree, that is a distraction that would have me thinking of my bills and if I should actually spend money. And just to be clear, I prefer the perpetual version of Reason MUCH more than any subscription. I think it’s so much better to make the commitment to the software and have it there ready to capture the musical narrative in my head.

For it to be financially viable, the hourly rate would have to be pretty high.

Suppose the typical user spent $5/month on average over the years, and it was priced so that 2 hours of daily use would add up to $5/month. In that case, you'd it would cost $0.08 per hour.

But ... we're still talking about trying to reach people who aren't willing to spend $5/month.

Hourly pricing just doesn't make market sense unless it's for one-off use. And to make this viable, it would have to be targeting one-off uses of Reason at a premium rate (maybe around $0.50-$1/hr).

It's just not a useful market to serve or usage pattern to cater for at these price points.

Besides, you'll soon have people asking for it to be priced by the minute, and then the second 😅

Welcome to Reason and ReasonTalk.
I agree with you on both points.
People love the product so much that they take it personally and their passion can sometimes be expressed in, what seems like, toxic ways.
Players are to MIDI what synthesizers are to waveforms.

Nah, we love em really. It's more like a bit family event full of batching (complaining) and moaning rather than real actual toxicity.
Everything will be fine once they sort out the sequencer, you'll see.

Welcome,

It's not so much toxic and more like when your favourite long lost uncle turns up with a new toy that can't be found anywhere on the planet but the batteries are impossible to buy..

You love the toy but really wished he had thought about the batteries as well

of course, I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I suspect the vast majority of criticisms here DO come from a genuine desire to see Reason become better. there are some perhaps obvious exceptions who don’t even try to hide their dislike for the software (i.e. trolls), and others who are just incapable of shutting up about certain things they feel are being overlooked (I count myself a member of this group).

I haven't felt like I've owned Reason since implemented Codemeter. Reason+ just makes it official.

Tough love..I can't use any other software even if I wanted. Been here since 2.5, almost 10 versions in.
No other DAW for me out there and I've tried them all.

Nonsense. Some of us are just salty that Reason 12 stand-alone DAW doesn’t have any core sequencer improvements planned. There’s only a handful of users here who seem hell bent on sending vitriol towards Reason Studios. Most of us want them to succeed and keep developing Reason.

100000% I have ProTools, Studio One and Ableton Live to help write with others and IMHO those programs have some cool features I wish were also in Reason. (e.g. VST3 Support and Punch In Record), BUT I would MUCH prefer to only work in Reason. Its like, I would not get divorced from Reason because I know what I have, is good with reason.

I don't think it'll be in the initial main Reason 12 release but reckon in the following point versions but that's just my guess.
