collaborate with musicians

I've been out of the music scene for a while just wondering where musician go to "collaborate" these days with each other meaning for 'free' if such a thing exist. Years ago I use to go to allihoopa but that's morphed into something else. If you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
