How often do you Automate Patterns?

Never, I actively avoid it.

One thing that sets Reason apart is its use and integration of Patterns on Devices and Players together with automating such patterns on the Sequencer.

So my question is, how often does any one actually use it?

Is it clunky and prehistoric? Or is it a major feature and tool that is often overlooked and not spoken about?

Automating Matrix patterns was how I got started with Reason. While I don't use the Matrix as much these days, I do sequence ABL3 patterns very often and Pattern Mutator has also become a new favorite on other instruments. I also use many of the UJAM plugins and sequence their built-in patterns.

I prefer patterns over midi.

All those midi notes... all over the place, makes me more crazy, than I already am.

I do it all the time. I start a song with a few patterns for drums, bass or whatnot and use pattern lanes to switch them. Later I can convert them to regular note lanes and add some variation.

All the time. I use Matrix a lot. My sequencer is full of those A1, A2, A3... strips. It's very visual and allows for fast editing

I never automate them. I mess with switching between them to get sequences I like then I copy the patterns into a sequencer. I find it much easier to visualise and edit like that.
