What are you watching at the moment? (possible spoilers)
The Platform, Spanish horror. Just finished The Border, Swedish fantasy. Both good.
heyhey,
the queen's gambit was spectacular
westworld was great for seasons 1 and 2
season 3, i liked the addition of aaron paul, but the story elements were shot
wondering what next season will be like
in the middle of expanse: season 2, it's getting more interesting
deadwood was great all the way through, including the movie they made later
justified is a keeper all the way through (again, with timothy olyphant)
here is a shoutout to all the guitarists here on the forum
you need to watch from beginning to end (it's short)
cheers,
j

Adam Curtis' latest documentary series, 'Can't Get You Out of my Head' is awesome. I've watched part 1-3 so far and it's been absolutely fascinating
Synopsis: We are living through strange days. Across Britain, Europe and America societies have become split and polarised not just in politics but across the whole culture. There is anger at the inequality and the ever growing corruption - and a widespread distrust of the elites. And into this has come the pandemic that has brutally dramatised those divisions. But despite the chaos there is a paralysis - a sense that no one knows how to escape from this. This new series of films by Adam Curtis tell the story of how we got to this place. And why both those in power - and we - find it so difficult to move on. The films trace different forces across the world that have led to now, not just in the West, but in China and Russia as well. It covers a wide range - including the strange roots of modern conspiracy theories, the history of China, opium and opiods, the history of Artificial Intelligence, melancholy over the loss of empire and, love and power. And whether modern culture, despite its radicalism, is really part of the new system of power. And the films are told in a different way - they are an emotional history of what went on inside the heads of all kinds of people. Because in the age of the individual - what you felt and what you wanted and what you dreamed of were going to become the driving force across the world. What was forgotten in that age was that much of what we feel is also formed by the society around us. Above all by the power structures. And now those structures are decaying - everywhere - their weakness and uncertainty makes us feel empty and frightened of the future. That is what is paralysing us - and blocking us from imagining different kinds of societies and a better future Can't Get You Out Of My Head is an epic history that shows how and why that happened. How we made this particular world. And that it was not inevitable.

There are supposed to be 6 parts. Parts 4-6 were still up on youtube yesterday, but I've been reading about copyright issues that have gotten them removed. If you're in the UK you can still watch them on BBC Iplayer. I hope they're coming back online soon, I obviously also want to see where it goes. Generally with Curtis documentaries they meander quite a bit but I found this one better with tyingup loose threads so far. I was particulary impressed by the story of Michael X, how he seemed to come full circle with the colonial attitudes he started out opposing. I feel that there is always an underlying point about thefrailty and the folly of human life/endeavours, but I can understand if that's not a very satisfying conclusion to some.

Why, it's an ancient idea. Most goals people set for themselves are inherently false or utopian. We can't really reach them in this world even if acting sincerely, though sometimes we may be denounced as acting out of other, latent motives or psychological traumas. Examples of such utopian goals would be individual happiness and security.
It is interesting to see what the author is driving at.

Yeah one thing I also found very interesting so far is the way Curtis approaches the history he's documenting as a series of personal stories. Like the part about the wife of Mao, or the part about those two objectivist guys and their "operation b r a i n f u c k" it's almost like a hidden history behind the history that we're taught in school.orthodox wrote: ↑14 Feb 2021Why, it's an ancient idea. EDIT:
Having seen it all (6/6), I'm disappointed with the conclusions. Despite showing the screwup of all the ideas of the past, the author still believes people could regain their confidence and come up with some new rational idea of the future. He seems to be more concerned with the rise and fall of those ideas than the human conscience itself. The view is also very narrow and one-sided, he focuses on drama, fear and frustration. And he never touched any socio-philosophical theories that help explain what's going on without going into mysterious hidden sides of human mind.
Thanks for the tip, I had already gotten a hold of the last 3 parts through some intrepid high seas swashbuckling. I agree the latter half is a bit disappointing; I especially thought the 6th episode felt rushed and uneven. I remember every other sentence in the narration starting with "but..." which added to the confusion. There were still interesting bits but it should have been edited down a bit, as Curtis drags in everything but the kitchen sink (he rambles) and he repeats himself. Episode 5 (the lordly ones) was more interesting but also a bit of a stretch as far as the sad fate of that iraqi man.orthodox wrote: ↑27 Feb 2021They are unblocked on YT now: https://www.youtube.com/c/AdamCurtisDocumentary/videosAuryn wrote: ↑14 Feb 2021There are supposed to be 6 parts. A while ago I mentioned in this topic a new documentary series called "Can't Get You out of My Head" by Adam Curtis which I would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in modern social history, modern politics, and how it all came to be this way
Now it seems Curtis has already returned! This time not with an epic 6-part series about how our relationship to power has evolved, but rather with a 6-minute (!) film about how we've all become paranoid weirdos. I think mr. Curtis is pulling our leg a bit and lampooning his own unique style, but I thought I'd post it just the same as I thought it was entertaining.

Watching BBC's documentary series Frozen Planet. Very interesting series about the life of animals, birds and insects in extreme conditions. It was a discovery how killer whales can hunt seals, it was unexpected to watch how male penguins create nests and wait for females. I liked the albatrosses very much. It turns out that their chicks are in the care of their parents for up to 13 months. It's funny to watch a huge dandelion broiler sitting in the nest and screaming - waiting for the parents to bring the fish.
