Sad news today about the death of Dave Greenfield from the damn Covid-19.

Still often thought of as a punk band, and certainly they were a major player of the punk era, The Stranglers were far more than that, and part of the reason for their greatness is undoubtably one of the finest keyboard players of the era, who wrote and co-wrote many of their finest tracks.

Obviously his greatest work is Golden Brown, a #2 UK chart hit performed on harpischord in 6/8 and 7/4. An amazing piece of songwriting

Great use of synths on this waltz, made especially famous by friend of the band chef Keith Floyd, who memorably used it as the theme music for his wonderfully alcohol-fuelled BBC cookery travelogues back in the 80s.

Hammond wins

The lovely electric piano of Strange Little Girl

and lastly let's have some full-on electro-punk, (Get A) Grip (On Yourself) from 1977.

Let last night I couldn’t sleep and was sat with my guitar working out the chords and timing for Golden Brown. Stranglers were magic.

He'll be missed.
Especially liked the part where The Stranglers would call a club and cancel someone else's gig and then call again as The Stranglers looking for a gig.
Who’s using the royal plural now baby? 🧂

Nice (and educational) post JP, was counting along to golden brown and the harpsichord part is indeed amazingly is in 7/4. TIL that song is from 1981 and not the sixties BTW.

Also is that champagne supernova I hear on waltzinblack?
