Take a look, this Ryzen 3900X build is 2000$, but if you take out the graphics, more like 1500$. This is on par with the Intel i9 9900k or better.

I think you need a graphics cards with to go with the 3900X as it is a CPU only, it doesn't have integrated graphics.

AMD does have the 3400G which is an "APU" (basically CPU with integrated graphics) so you won't need a graphics card to go with it. However, it's a lot less powerful than the 3900X and is more so a competitor to the Core i3.

Or go with the 3900X but get a used, lower spec graphics card.

Any advice from anyone going for a Ryzen build? I'm considering something like a 3600 on a B450 motherboard. Should I go for the older B450s or spend more on a newer X575 board? How's audio performance on either? Or does it matter?

I dunno, but a good VGA card (fanless preferably) is a good idea regardless. It's asking for issues to place the VGA burden on a chip. May work for some but a dedicated card is best traditionally..........

Ran for years with integrated video on my 3770K; had no issues whatsoever. It has an Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU built in and runs pretty damn lean, and is totally silent (something that comes in handy for a studio PC). The only reason I stopped using it was because a friend of mine gifted me an Nvidia GTX 980 Ti for virtually free.
Win 10 | Ableton Live 11 Suite |  Reason 12 | i7 3770k @ 3.5 Ghz | 16 GB RAM | RME Babyface Pro | Akai MPC Live 2 & Akai Force | Roland System 8, MX1, TB3 | Dreadbox Typhon | Korg Minilogue XD

I went for a cheap x575 (asus prime) instead of an older b450. There's probably no real world difference but I figured the x570 should have more upgradeability for future proofing and the price difference was negligible. Ryzen seems to crave fast ram more than Intel so I went for 3600mhz stuff to go with my 3600 cpu. M2 drives are really affordable and worth it imo. Performance is good, I can really load up heavy projects and it's stable. 64 frames buffer gives round trip latency of about 10ms (5 input) on my gen 1 Scarlett interface. I'm happy with that for now but I'd prefer to upgrade that card one day too.

AT 64 my Babyface pro is just over 4ms roundtrip. Expensive but worth it.

I've built a couple but the one i use now I had built for me. There's arguments to follow both avenues but I think most people here would agree that an off the shelf prebuilt system is probably not worth it. Do your research and tell your supplier what you need. Usually getting them to build it for a few quid is worth the support and lack of stress. I had a bent pin on one of my usb ports which took a few days to discover but they were happy to swap the part out, if I'd have done it myself it would have been a different story.
@pushedbutton on twitter, add me, send me a message, but don't try to sell me stuff cos I'm skint.

Um, @ 44.1. IF your card can handle that (which I doubt) it's not even close to mine. Nice try.

Reported latency is different to actual real time latency.
