I'm currently looking for a good chair. I hear that I should forget about these office chairs, cause no matter how fancy they look, in the long time they can become quite uncomfortable.

Then there are the new craze with the 'gamer' chairs. They have a slight sporty, car seat look to them, so the kids can go "vroom-vroom I'm so cool and edgy" x D - but they don't look so bad. And I guess they are made for rotting all day in them, too!

In the end, my ass will make the decision - this is pretty much one of the cases where we need to think with out butts primarily.

Here's one candidate:

But then again, this one looks sooo fancy! It screams "I'm boss, and make srs bsnss!"

I do more than welcome suggestions and info what to look at when buying a good chair. It's more about comfort for me. So I guess, gotta watch the material?

Get one that keeps your back straight. Ergonomic all the way.

Well, the green one does actually have proper back supporting and can be adjusted in all ways. Lucky I need it for at home, so the looks aren't that important. I mean, I do dig it, but obviously I couldn't use something like that in an office, full of fancy-pants people, for example.

I have a kneeling chair. You can still slouch.
Yeah you have to work harder to achieve it, but we humans have this ability to do our worst.
It sounds like I'm putting down the species, but I is one...

But it does seem to be the next best thing after snake oil, right?

I'm already browsing for some. They don't give them cheaper either. I found one by a medical supplier.

Aeron by Herman Miller - these are the defacto "studio chair" in more studios I've been in any any other, by far.
They are not cheap, but neither is back surgery! You'll forget the chair is even there. You can actually find them used for a better bargain.

I love these chairs, but at home I use a backless chair. First, as a life long piano player and drummer, I've spent more time in backless chairs than ones with backs. Also, if you play guitar or bass you'll not want arms on the chair. And even when using the Aeron, when you sit up and listen critically (positioning yourself in the sweet spot) you typically sit up and away from the back. But with any good chair, when you DO lean back, the Aeron totally supports you ergonomically and very comfortably.

God, yes. Aerons. Luxury!

Back in my banking days there were three of those floating around between 30+ users in the graphics department, while most if not all the IBD folk in the next room also had them. All the other chairs in our office were basically:

really uncomfortable bargain bin shite.

Weirdly, most of the graphics staff didn't seem to either be aware of—or maybe didn't like, though that seems hard to believe—the Aerons, so most mornings me and a colleague would be able to grab one from wherever it ended up overnight. On more than one occasion, though, I couldn't get my arse situated upon one upon arrival, so I did sneak next door to IBD to wheedle out one of theirs. ;)

The problem with Aerons for home use, and the reason I don't have a (second-hand, obviously) one, can be that mesh backs aren't a great if you have a cat

FWIW, they're the chairs used on BBC Question Time too, afaict.

Not sure I'm brave enough to go backless, though  .

I use what they call Emergency Room (soft rubber) casters cos I'm an old apartmental dweller and I have some small amount of courtesy concerning my downstairs neighbor whilst scooting across the living room floor at 3am.

Get something with an arm rest and make sure you set up height of chair and knee and elbow angles as dictated by “the experts”.

I really want armrests (and a back!) for extended mostly-computer work, but no armrests when playing guitar while sitting, and didn't want to have two chairs in my small workspace. So after a lot of searching, I ended up getting a chair from Office Max with armrests that easily lift up out of the way when donning a guitar. My only gripe is it can be noisy sometimes when shifting weight, so I'm always interested if there are better alternatives with flippable armrests.

Make sure you get one with fine Corinthian leather.

I found a local second hand office shop that had some once upon a time very expensive, solid office chairs for a bargain. Much better than the overpriced crap in department stores/consumer grade office shops (ie office works, in Australia)
The main problem with that stuff was padding that compressed way too much over time. And fake leather. Avoid this stuff at all costs as eventually it will start to shed it's skin. Arm rests are not a bad idea but make sure they're foldable if you play an instrument such as guitar.

Hehe. Tell me about it. My chair has one arm removed for that very reason. It attracts a few odd comments from people!
