Theoretical question here... if Reason didn't exist what would be the main DAW (choose only one) that you would use? The only other DAWs I've ever used are a really early version of GarageBand and then moved on to Logic Express 7. Thank you for your participation.

I would've tried Ableton and still feel the same. It feels backwards to me. It would've been Bitwig and Studio One in the finals but ultimately Studio One in the end probably.

I take that back, Ableton or S1

I didn't list VCV Rack because... it's not a DAW... ...
I'm hardly in Reason recently. Studio One is delivering on a level that Reason can only dream of and even the very conservative Cubase is looking very modern. I'm starting to see Reason as a tool for sound designing and geeky wiring rather than music making, and I've never been into sound design.
BTW, you missed Cakewalk out, it's still got a decent user base plus it's now completely free via Bandlab.

Ableton Live I use it already but for my needs right now I prefer Reason. There's a lot in common between Reason and Live+ Max as far as being a modular playground. Live+ Max I'd say has greater potential power but Reason has the more streamlined/intuitive workflow and also the far better organised walled garden of Re's vs Max devices
I have no idea... used Digital Performer years ago, before switching to Reason, and so much has changed since then, I don’t really know much of what some of these others have to offer.
I used to really like Logic Pro until I realized you can't update it; you need to obtain a new license. So it just sits on my drive. It's like the magic disappeared. It even feels better going back to a super old Cubase version on MacOS 9. Those days when I feel like midi-experimenting like in the old days. Reason's midi is of course quite doable but it's stealing all screen estate. Cubase is faster. Even on Atari. And I don't mean the "performance" in any way; I mean in creating tracks and performing keyboard commands etc.
If reason didn't exist I would be on nuendo or cubase because I've had Reason for 12+ years so what is popular now did not exist or was to limited back then. Now because I'm on m.pac I'm sure I use Logic Pro læ....
You mean the e-magic ?
I almost got Fruity Loops instead of Reason. I sometimes think how different things would have been - a totally different journey with a totally different community. I also think of the possibility, that if it wasn't for Reason's awe inspiring cabling system and working environment, maybe my passion and drive would have died off. Really glad that I'm here and that this is the journey I chose. Sliding doors and all that

Same here. Looking back at the years 1999-2001, I had also access to Cubase and Nuendo which was cool because of the VSTs and all but it didn't click with me. Too complicated, too abstract. I had no MIDI controller at the time. Along came Fruity Loops. It was considered as a toy by the community (tracker users / demo scene) back then and it probably was. But then came Reason 1.0 - mind=blown. Suddenly you had it all in one box. Infinite creative freedom. A software that matured along with my skills, getting better and better over the years. Until recently, for 18 years, I haven't even considered using another DAW. I hope Reason 11 allows me to go back into that state of mind.Jagwah wrote: ↑12 Aug 2019I almost got Fruity Loops instead of Reason. Really cool man, I would have loved to have started back then.diminished wrote: ↑12 Aug 2019Same here. Yeah man if it's a good price. I'm unhappy with my Fostex 160, the routing doesn't make any sense and it's hard to get a grasp on what buttons are pressed etc.
Unless you mean by "seriously", that it's bogus to ask because you'll NEVER sell
But I guess the shipping costs would make no sense anyway and I should probably check locally for an alternative to my Fostex.
