After so many years of producing dance music I have finally discovered the importance of snare drums. I have always loved claps as opposed to snares for the 2 and 4, but have spent over a decade without understanding how great snares are for adding groove to drums when placed off beat.

I only post this in case it helps someone else!

I always thought claps were silly but functional. A tight piccolo snare sounds more interesting.

Great now I'm listening to youtube videos of people playing on different snare drums with different tunings. Rabbit holes everywhere, man. Gotta work.
:reason: Most recent track: resentment (synthwave) || Others: on my YouTube channel •ᴗ•

Is that yours in the pic? It's in great shape if so. Did you get the crazy curved hard plastic case too?

As a drummer, snares have always been important. I've always been a huge "backbeat" guy too, with 4-on-the-floor being a pattern that puts less emphasis on the snare/backbeat because there''s always a kick hitting at the same time. So you don't have to pay as much attention to the snare because it's never heard on it's own - it's more of a "supplement" to the kick than a sound on it's own.

Plus, becoming an engineer in the 80s meant "big snare" had to be in your bag of tricks. And while we had plenty of drum machines and CMIs etc, there was still lots of real drums (or a combination of both) to record, which means you gotta get good snare sounds (although personally, kick sounds were always easier for me to get in the studio).

The pic is off the internet. My snare has all kinds of sweat rust damage on the rims, but not the alloy shell.
The case still lives!

Damn, brings back some sweet memories (and my handle also broke). Lugged that thing back and forth to school for many years…

Yeah, on the school bus PITA.
For you youngsters out there, there was a time in this country when you could buy a bumper sticker at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere, and it would be understood as ironic. I do not own nor have I ever owned a simi automatic weapon or a magic motion bed.
