What is that drum that plays throughout the track taking the place of a traditional kick? I'm thinking about doing something like this for a hip hop production.

Mostly reverb triggered with "something". Put the reverb on an AUX, add compression and saturation. You just need a trigger that sounds a bit like a low Tom.

Oops I forgot I made this thread. I ended up playing with taiko drum samples to get in the ball park and came up with some kind of rhythm. The low end on the taiko drum is amazing from what I can tell with samples. The track is the rapper's favorite off the EP I just finished. Hah. I'll check out that cinematic video and maybe pick up something for next time.
