To celebrate the release of the Virtual Bassist Rack Extensions: Royal (all-purpose pop and rock bass), Mellow (soulful modern double bass), and Rowdy (rough and driven picked rock bass), UJAM and ReasonTalk are proud to announce the Virtual Bassist competition! Compose a song spotlighting these new members of the Virtual band and demonstrate your ability to push these instruments to the max for a chance to win them and more! Ten lucky winners total!

Prizes

1st prize: Virtual Bassist Bundle + Beatmaker Bundle + a story feature

2nd – 5th: Virtual Bassist Bundle OR Beatmaker Bundle

6th – 10th: The choice of any one Virtual Bassist or Beatmaker RE

Rules

The rules are simple: showcase one or more of the UJAM Virtual Bassist Rack Extensions in your original song.

Use them in ways in which you feel might be intended and/or get creative! Use them in player mode utilizing the countless included rhythms or take full control in instrument mode…or both! It’s up to you!

  • Only one entry per participant.
  • Your song must be at least 2 minutes long.
  • You must submit the isolated bass track along with the song.
  • Song challenge begins Tuesday, April 16, 2019.
  • Song challenge ends Monday, May 6 @ 11:59 pm Stockholm/Bremen time.
  • After the closing date, you are not allowed to resubmit/replace your entry. Any resubmissions or alterations will result in disqualification.
  • All entrants, when requested, must be prepared to provide evidence that the rules have been adhered to. This includes providing a copy of the Reason song file to verify.
  • Judges’ decision is final.

To export only the bass in an audio file, use “Bounce Mixer Channels” in the File Menu. You can leave effects on. Post both links in the thread, in the same post.
  • Please include in the description of your song what you are using from the Virtual Bassist series.
  • We will update the first post to include each song entry (this confirms that your song was accepted).
  • After submitting your song you should not alter it anymore. Once submitted, please don’t change the privacy setting of your song (private/public) as this would invalidate your link.
We encourage participants to use #UJAM, #ReasonTalk, #VirtualBassist when uploading entries to SoundCloud or other hosts. If you feel so inclined to share your entries on social media, tag them @ujaminstruments and @Reasontalk on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Wohoo, finished! :)

I've got a question regarding the things you want via email: a link to the song (on YouTube) and the bassline attached as MP3 is okay? Or do you need a WAV? Sorry for asking, it's my first competition.
:reason: Most recent track: resentment (synthwave) || Others: on my YouTube channel •ᴗ•

Good question, thanks for asking. Both tracks, the song and isolated bass track, can be shared the same way, whether they are hosted on Soundcloud, YouTube, etc.

It's for sharing not only with the judges, but the forum as well. Fun to hear them within the song, but also soloed. The additional email step is more of a backup for us, as well as a means to keep Propellerhead usernames associated with entries and kept private for those who wish to have it that way.

Happy first competition and glad to have you participating! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Joey, I'll send an email with my PH username and the things I'm posting here.

First of all, here's the song:

Please enjoy.
I went the triphoppy route as usual, because MELLOW ;) The hardest part was probably getting the rest of my lanes to groove with Mellow and A-List. I'm very happy with that device, because you get results that feel alive quite fast. A little bit of EQing and parallel shenanigans and I was set. Due to the genre, the bassline itself is kinda repetitive (I'm also a sloppy programmer in that regard), it needs the rest of the instruments to shine. But have a listen yourselves:

I'm very excited for the things you other guys come up with!

Er... We forgot the "UJAM and RT members can not participate" bit!!! You have 15 minutes to slip in a song in before we edit the rules!

I knew those were the rules, but I should have just kept my big mouth shut and submitted a song when finished! ;)

Anyone else having problems with this thing? I'm trying to jam with the Rowdy and I can't change style. Everything plays the same. Changing presets changes the sound but not what's being played. All my other RE's and VST's seems to work fine. This is a challenge indeed. :p Is it only me?

Low octaves on your keyboard are for the "styles", higher octaves for a change of root note. You can see which ones on the RE itself.

To play live you need to have a larger midi keyboard, or you lay down the note changes first, then go down an octave or two and play/record the styles.

Yeah, I figured that out. I have 49 keys so with four octaves there is one left to play with and the others for phrasing. Which is good enough for me. But shouldn't there be different phrasing to different styles? The info says 40 styles and over 450 phrases, but i have like, one style and about 12 phrases.

I meant phrases btw, not styles. Sorry for the mix up.

11 style phrases (unique per style) * 41 styles = 451.
Plus 23 common phrases (same for each style) = 474 phrases in total.

This is so weird. Occasionally it changes and I can hear different styles. Then without reason it's back to being the same. It has happened maybe twice now.. Still having fun though!

I also noticed that the style sometimes changes for no reason and many of styles sound very similar. I decided to go with the Instrument mode.

Hi!

Here're my participation on the contest.

This song has the Mellow Agogo Patch in instrument mode, where i can control the legatos and slides, plus dead notes.

Just for reference i end up using the A-List Studio drummer, and an A-List Electric Guitarrist Pop Chords so plenty of more stuff that has Ujam's hand!
The piano is "mad on a lady" from Reason Abbey Road Keys, the organ is the blues patch from Sononics Revival and the lead in'strument is a Hammond Melodion 44 (played by yours truly!) all mixed and mastered in Reason.

So with no further delay, here's the song:

And the bass line:

Hope you like it!

Here is my entry. I tried to play the bass a bit and it's a bit more rocky poppy, so please do not slap me for my first tries.

I used "Melow" for the main bass part, "Royal" for a topping and Rowdy for the guitar-like part. The e-guitar like stuff comes form a pretty bad programmed Europa patch and some amps. The vocal i had laying around here.

And here is my entry. I chose Rowdy for this and had plans for some kind of rock song, but I guess I spaced out a little bit along the way. Tends to happen when you have fun with Reason. ;)

Instruments also used: Radical piano, Malström, the combinator patch "Movie strings", NN-XT, Thor, Kong, Dr.OctoRex & A-list Power Drummer. Guitars are played by me using the TH-U plugin by Overloud. I also use one instance of Rowdy to do the "Dave Jerden-trick" (layering guitar with a bass + wah pedal). Had to try it with software and it worked!

Here is the song:

Here is my entry. I used 2 instances of Virtual Bassist Mellow. Other instruments: Beatmaker DOPE, LABS Strings, LABS Cello, LABS E Piano, AAS Strum Session 2, Radical Piano, Thor, Europa, Grain, Rostnomo. Kong.

Not my genre, but like the groove and the melody!
Can't produce in the bedroom - people are sleeping there!
