Reason 10.3 public beta is open!
After so many different new changes and additions over these last few years I have been praying that a new update would bring back some of the old-school performance of Reason and this one looks like it is!
I just played thru three of my "heaviest" tracks that were all starting to cause pops, clicks and "computer too slow" message. Now they all play, all the way through without a hitch. Cant wait for the official release!

To hear this makes me happy and i am now waiting for the final release. Good to see PH making such a good step into the future and payed their technical bills. Applaus to PH making this possible and the devs for making this happen!-008' wrote: ↑10 Apr 2019After so many different new changes and additions over these last few years I have been praying that a new update would bring back some of the old-school performance of Reason and this one looks like it is!

Yep. As a UAD user myself, I concur. Loaded the beta with a ton of VST's per channel and not a hint of a hiccup. Looks like they conquered the beast.
Good job, Props!

I just got around to installing the 10.3 beta. So far, I've tested a few songs that were giving me clicks and pops with NI, Izotope and a few other VSTs and it's passing with flying colors. Great job, Props!

For me, the "performance" is virtually the same.
Maybe I'm not testing correctly but bars and windows performance seem identical.

What is your buffer size?reggie1979 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2019For me, the "performance" is virtually the same.

Exactly. Now ppl may understand that such things take time and cost money. 5 months later than planned plus the time they already were working on it... Very expensive development... And we get it for free

What are you using when you are comparing?
Iirc the reason dsp bar shows just simply how much the cpu is being used by all applications running on your system, not just the processes used by Reason. Thus, if you have a lot of miscellaneous system utilities running, the bar might not be too different, until you put a heavy load on it.
It doesn't show the CPU usage at all. What it's showing is how close to empty the audio buffer is getting.ShawnG wrote: ↑12 Apr 2019Iirc the reason dsp bar shows just simply how much the cpu is being used by all applications running on your system, not just the processes used by Reason. When Reason is performing it's DSP tasks, they all must complete within a period of time. At 44.1k with a 512 sample buffer, that's 11.6 ms. If the average amount of time it takes to process 8 batches (prior to 10.3) is 5ms, your DSP meter will be half filled. That means Reason is having to dip halfway into the buffer to keep from glitching. Increasing the buffer size can smooth out occasional spikes (below 11.6 ms--a single big spike can completely empty the buffer), but if every 64 sample batch takes longer than 1.45 ms, it won't matter the buffer size, it'll eventually run out.
The DSP meter is affected by everything else on the machine, because in addition to running the DSP code, the CPU is doing other things. Those things cut into the time Reason has to finish its task.
Yes, correct, and thank you. However my very simplistic post, and your more technically correct post both outline the same thing to our fixated on the DSP bar friend, which is that the bar is affected by other processes that are running on the machine, which is the main point.

64. I've heard that that is why but I'll be damned if I understand it.aeox wrote: ↑12 Apr 2019What is your buffer size?reggie1979 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2019For me, the "performance" is virtually the same.

Just the visual of bars and the task manager. I'm running at 64 buffer which I've heard is the culprit. If there is another way to test between 10.2 and the beta PLEASE, enlighten me
IIRC, Reason performance at 64 samples is on par with other DAWs(Could be wrong, I don't use any other DAWs). But the problem was that, increasing your buffer size didn't help much before. Now it does !reggie1979 wrote: ↑12 Apr 201964. I've heard that that is why but I'll be damned if I understand it.
isn't the official update supposed to be available for everyone pretty soon? I think I've read here in this same thread it could even happen this weekend or next week?

As ScuzzyEye said, the shorter the buffer, the harder it is for Reason to process in due time. If you want to test the benefits of 10.3, simply increase your buffer size, like 512, 1024 or even 2048 samples (because 10.2 is running at a fixed 64 samples, testing 10.3 with a 64 samples size is akin to using 10.2). You'll notice that the bigger it is, the lower the DSP bar will be (and more importantly, the more devices you'll be able to use at the same time). You may want to watch this video by normen to fully understand the relationship between DSP, CPU and sample rate:

Yeah the point of this update is that you will see improvement at buffer sizes beyond 64, where previously you wouldn't (for reasons I'm not sure we're supposed to go into outside of the beta?). So typically, for me, performance at 64 samples wasn't *too* much worse than in Cubase, but going to 96, 128, even up to 1024 and beyond basically didn't buy me any extra headroom. Now on 10.3, even going to 96 can be enough to get me out of a pinch. And at 512, it's actually hard to make Reason break a sweat. I posted a video further back in this thread of 10.3 running a big orchestral project at 512, with multiple Kontakts, Europas, Parsec, mastering plugins and all sorts.reggie1979 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2019Full.

And this is just VSTs. I can confirm both on my machine and my girlfriend's laptop (which is way slower than mine) that performance across the board is better. Last time she demo'd Reason she loved it but couldn't chuck much at it. Couple of Antidotes and it was crackle city. Out of curiosity we tried the beta on it last night and it was sitting comfortably around 2-3 bars the whole time.
even as it comes out... I wait for a shoe to drop ... be put back on ...and then.... will update... not wanting any strange bugs stranger then what exisits now/// my opinion... not hating

Anyone testing 10.3 with Elektron's Overbridge and their hardware?

To all of those who explained to me, thanks.
What is weird is I thought at first I DID see a tremendous improvement and then that fell off.
Computers are weird. It's the only way I can rationalize that.

I hope so. I committed one of the cardinale sinns and just startd working in Beta. I couldn't help it. 10.3 is running that smoothe! Never the less I'm a little nervous...
