I have the feeling if Overbridge could work flawlessly in Reason with all Elektron's hardware (+ Analog Four MKII as an audio interface) most other VSTs would also. It is just a feeling, but a nice cozy feeling.

Go Sweden!

Not necessarily. According to the CDM article, some VST will perform about the same:

So, Reason 11. When?

I think 491 days passed between R9 and R10. It's been 489 days since R10 was released. Is the VST optimization delaying R11? Thought Verdane was supposed to speed things up? :puf_bigsmile:
Because I love playing with spreadsheets...

I took the 3 most recent versions of Reason (dating back to Reason 8 in 2014) and calculated a few dates:

We will pass the shortest time between recent Reason versions on 2/28/2019.
We will pass the average time between recent Reason versions on 4/24/2019.
We will pass the longest time between recent Reason versions on 7/17/2019.

My personal guess is that Reason 11 will land in the 75th percentile, which would be 5/22/2019.

A. we're just taking our time and getting things right

or

B. fuck, this is harder than we thought and we're having lots of issues and we can't release it yet.

I've worked in IT, so in my experience the answer is the big fat B. :!:
It's option A. :geek: As the CDM-article hinted at/explained, it was required to re-write big parts of Reason in an effort to behave as VSTs expected buffer sizes to behave. From obvious parts like the VST integration itself to less obvious things like the count-in or send fx. This means there's a lot of areas to test, so we're taking our time to make sure it works well. Of course we also want to involve VST developers in this testing.

I’m sure their intentions are to release something worth the wait. As for how long that takes... could be a massive struggle. IMHO, in giving in to the huge demand for VST integration they created a nightmare. So many things are now out of their hands. I wouldn’t want to be on the dev team, but at least their management haven’t thrown them under a bus with a pointless date. This is the first time I’ve regretted giving up the hardware, maybe it will never work as intended again.
Yeah, regarding a date I think this is key: saying a date before we know that date will hold for sure is unfair to both developers and you—which I learned the hard way with the previous announcement. But don't worry, we're making great progress!

I wouldn't call the integration a nightmare at all, but it's definitely a different set of demands for the application as different plug-ins can behave quite differently. As for "working as intended", I'm not quite sure what you mean but our goal in general is of course that Reason should work really, really well. Allowing VSTs to use bigger buffer sizes and thus run as intended is one thing, but it's not like we'll stop working on Reason after that. :)
Thank you for the update, much appreciated.

Haha! love it.

And just my two cents. I think this optimisation update will delay the original date Propellerheads intended for the release of Reason 11 but it'll only be by 3 weeks a month I reckon.

Considering that...

- Mattias' post doesn't offer any indication as to the time of v10.3 release, which can be because he's more cautious now but also because he knows there's still a lot to test

- there's a new deal just up today until 31/3, that wouldn't happen if v10.3 was mere days/weeks ahead, because people would buy/upgrade anyway to take advantage of better VST performance

...my guess for v10.3 is April/May at best.

I’ve been working in professional software development for 30 years and managing large teams for the last 20. Mostly video games but some applications too.

Compatability testing is always a pain when you have to check against a large number of devices. It’s usually very quick to get something that mostly works... then you can spend a lot of time and effort trying to fix as many of the edge cases that don’t quite work properly.

An example is making something for iOS devices and for Android devices. It’s a lot easier to get something robust developed for iOS because the number of machine models you need to support is a tiny fraction of all the Android devices out there, some of which have odd configurations which break your software.

I would imagine this situation could be somewhat analogous to what is Propellhead is currently going through. VST’s are (sorta) the equivalent of Android devices compared to the walled garden on RE’s and a good use experience means doing a lot of edge case testing with different VST’s under different conditions to optimize performance.

All great insight. Especially yours, Sargie. I've just tried to forget the update is coming at all. I've found my workarounds for VSTs and I'm treating the update as a luxury that isn't for certain. I love Reason and would endure quite a lot before switching to another DAW.

Will it make More Cowbell run more efficiently on my computer?

What are you talking about, is it very cpu intensive?

Let's just say that having more than 4 running at the same time results in a lot of clinking and clanking even with the latency set at max.

There is a sale currently for 10 so I'd call it a good omen for my guess :)

I was thinking about this and I realised that whenever it comes through I'm still going to be disappointed if MIDI based vsts still don't work.

I wouldn't count on it for this update, the performance issue being worked on has no relation to midi VST support at all.

Yes. Just blitz the VST and bring it up to speed with other daws. VST3 support, multi-out, play midi vst's and optimisation. You should be able to scan for installed VST's with Reason already open too and they should throw in Track Freeze for good measure.

Yep, that's a lot of work but it's stuff that other DAWs all do now, including Cakewalk which is now completely free from BandLab. When your DAW is badly lagging behind a free offering you need to address it quickly I think.

It surely wont be long before 10.3 appears. About speculation on Reason 11, it surely depends on how many different teams have been working side by side in this process. It have happen before that a new upgrade version comes up but owners of current version still allows a free performance update. But that is mere wishful thinking, that the time delay is because they choose to launch new upgrade alongside the performance fix. But being more realistic, I would not expect a new upgrade to 11 before after may. Would be nice before the summer though, but I don´t mind autumn either. But what makes me guess it will be sooner is the demands from many users for some graphic upgrades that seem to fit with doing an overhaul of the Reason coding and its performance.
