Really hoping this sort of update allows Props to make Reason's VST performance handling better:

https://www.musicradar.com/news/new-win ... n-your-daw

An update to Windows 10 is on the way, and it looks like one of its features will be of direct benefit to DAW users.

We’re referring to a raising of the FLS (Fiber Local Storage) slot allocation ceiling. We won’t pretend to know exactly what this is and how it works, so we’ll allow Microsoft to explain.

“As PCs get more powerful, musicians have created increasingly complex projects with more tracks, more instruments, and deeper effects chains,” says the company on its website. “As a result, some of those musicians were running up against a FLS (Fiber Local Storage) slot allocation ceiling that prevented them from loading into their DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) as many unique plugins as they’d like.

“This build [18312] greatly raises that per-process FLS slot allocation ceiling, allowing loading potentially thousands of unique plugins. Beyond musicians, this change will positively impact any application that dynamically loads hundreds or thousands of unique DLLs that have statically-linked Visual C++ runtimes, or otherwise allocate FLS slots.”

Of course, you’ll still be limited by the power of your PC, but anything that facilitates higher instrument and effect counts is sure to go down well with plugin-hungry producers.

The build is currently in the hands of Windows Insiders, who are testing it, but we’re assuming that this and the other improvements will be rolled out to all users in due course. Find out more on the Microsoft website.

interesting...it says thousands of *unique* plugins, so it sounds like the benefit might be only on the first instance of a particular plugin in a given session. either way, could be some very welcome news!

It won't. All this future update will do is enable you to load more plugins. It addresses a hard limit that exists on the number of dll's that a process can load. There is no performance gain.

There is a slightly fuller technical explanation on Synthtopia which also subtly points out that the coding of VST's isn't as good as it should be.

That's one possibility, for sure.

That's not a possibility, that's a fact. Windows has a limit to the number of .dll-s one could run simultaneously and the problem was different VSTs would use that pool differently. For some, you could have 20 instances and they'd still take the same number of slots, eg. 5 slots. For others, every single instance would take eg. 40 slots (this is especially problematic with Arturia VSTs).

This "patch" won't suddenly make you able to put Ozone 8 on every channel. It doesn't improve performance.

Very unlikely. Windows 7 is a 10 year old OS (latest update was 7 years ago) that is largely being deprecated. Mainstream support ended years ago, and extended support ends January 14, 2020.

Why? Have you hit that particular limit?

It's a Windows problem dating back to XP.

Still on Win 8. Maybe time to upgrade? Have anyone tried after this new update?

When I first heard about this update, I thought it would contain something dealing with performance issues, but in fact this is something different. I'm still on Windows 7 and I wonder if this update is worth moving to Win 10

You have about one year to think about upgrading to Win10 as Win7 will then be obsolete anyway.
