Hi All,

I have an odd issue. Opened up Reason for the first time in a long while after updating to 10.2 and there don't appear to be any of my songs in the recent list under File. I've hunted around my HDD and yep, nothing anywhere that I can see. Very weird. It's like Reason has deleted all my Reason files or something.

Anyone got any ideas?

MacOS 10.14.1
Reason 10.2d93 build 9443

Cheers

I know on Windows that anything that's in the Reason folder will get deleted during an uninstall of Reason. So basically if you save any songs there they will get wiped out during an uninstall and subsequent re-install.

Users tend to save songs to a folder outside Reason's folder structure in order to prevent this.

Is this your issue? Sadly if it is, your files are gone.

Thanks for the reply Ostermilk.

I definitely didn't uninstall Reason, all I did was run the updater to get it to 10.2. I'm pretty sure the song files were in the /Documents directory which is a User folder as far as I know. Unless the update did more than just update the application I'm struggling to work out what happened.

Maybe a Mac user can be of more help than I.

As a Mac user like you... have you change user administration? Where do you usually store songs? Cause I really conoscious EXACTLY where and wich name of song I produce. I personally (since 2001) don't store on Mac/Pc systems but on a specific folder and on specific hdd . (On my case).
Have you deleted some folder recently?
Specific (and regularly backuped) is the secret to don't lose anything .
Excuse my bad english. [emoji6]

It seems one of the less-discussed issues people have with computers is "where to put things". Not just musicians. I suggest creating a folder on a drive other than the C drive that serves as a Reason folder for patches, samples, and songs. Songs would always be saved to something like E:\ErnstReason\Songs and if you find Recent documents don't appear you can always navigate to your custom location. This should be a better practice than using a prefab Windows-suggested location.

Thanks for all the responses.

In general I back everything up and try to run everything from my RAID array where possible, however, in some instances such as Reason it will create a default save location which is a pain to relocate. If you look in the Reason preferences there's no-where to change the default save location. Actually the /Documents/Reason folder worked well anyway so I just left it there and if a song gets to a certain point I'd just Save as... to my RAID drive.

The problem in this instance is that "something" must have occurred during the update to 10.2 (from 10.1) that has for some reason removed this folder from documents. Most audio apps use this as the default directory. For example Bitwig has a /Documents/Bitwig Studio folder and a /Projects sub-folder (which incidentally is intact despite many updates).

Now yes, while I broadly agree that perhaps a second backup of song projects would have been 'a good idea', if a program sets a default and saves to it I wouldn't have thought it would then delete it...

I've been doing audio on my Mac since 1995 and this is the first time I've ever lost anything so I haven't had a bad run :)

Oh well.

You could try to scan the whole drive for .reason files.

I have once lost some files as well. I was able to recover half of them with a file-recovery software. Maybe there's a software for a Mac as well? The earlier you'd run this software, the bigger chances there is to get them back.

Reason does not have a default place to save.
ie.
once you start saving in a position that you decide in the first instance
then it will always be the position to save (unless it is
of the position he proposes like any other DAW
that is, in the User / documents / music folder or something similar).
Moreover when saving in reason the appropriate save mask appears
where he asks us where to save. I do not completely understand where the problem is
at this point you will have trouble finding also the .doc or photoshop files. :?:
