It feels like every time I read an article related to Soundcloud I feel vindicated in my decision to cancel my Pro subscription some two or so years ago. Bandcamp is where my "complete" music releases go, Soundcloud is for everything that falls outside of that remit - ideas, one-offs, sneak peeks, etc. I'm still astounded that in 2018 their streaming quality is still kinda crap, and I still get frequent errors when using it. As it is, there is no way I'd treat it as an actual distribution platform but it's still useful for sharing tunes with little fuss.
Thanks for posting this.
So if an artist wants to create music and make some pocket change from it what's the best place/tool to do that? Is it bandcamp, or something similar? Their own website with a donate button? Patreon? Youtube?

I think it's best to create your own shop using Wordpress and Woocommerce.

I think people discover music mainly via Spotify, Apple Music and Youtube. Be there. And link to your own website and sell it from there. Or add a donation button.
I'm leaning towards having my own website and promoting it online. The music industry has been a ripping off artists for decades. I say, keep 100% of your profits.

The internet feels smaller and smaller because of examples like this.
An Internet 2.0 is needed, without the gatekeepers or any kind of middle-persons.

You can't force people to use a new product/service/mindset when they don't understand all the services they are using everyday already are not 'free'.
Codes are not freeing people. People are freeing people, and themselves. Thus people are the solution, if and when they decide to step away from 'free'.
An uphill battle against the ultimate state of materialism: when you don't even own yourself.

Bitcoin is a scam that fluctuates in value far too much to be of use as a currency, and the weaknesses of its design have been thoroughly exploited for the monetary gain of a small few. The blockchain tech itself is consuming so much energy that it's now materially contributing to ruining the earth's climate.
Bandcamp is a trustworthy and popular place to sell music with no upfront fees. I've had positive experiences putting music up on there.
You could alternately set up your own store like Marco suggested to reduce the third-party cut (though you're likely still going to be stuck dealing with PayPal), but the question comes down to whether the investment of time and effort to set it up is worthwhile for you. I imagine that for most musicians, it's not.

Bitcoin is to fiat currencies what Johannes Gutenberg's machine was to the Bible (Martin Luther and the Printing Press).
Bitcoin solved an impossible math problem: Bitcoin and the Byzantine Generals.
The value of Bitcoin does not change. The perception of it does, from the perspective of the bank_sters.
Bitcoin cannot and was never hacked, unlike the bank accounts of thousands in Greece, Cyprus, by the services and people they trusted (their own banks and their own governments).
Bitcoin is a protocol on top of the TCP/IP protocol.
The bitcoin network is worse for the planet than Mega Data centers from:
Google (all the apps, services, billions of YT videos, etc)?
Microsoft (Azure, etc)?
Amazon (AWS services,etc)?
Apple (Siri, app stores, etc)?
All of them needing lots of multiple, expensive cooling solutions.
Bitcoin is worse for the planet than the whole air travel industry?
Bitcoin is worse than all the millions of tons of chemicals we use to extract the stuff we need for our precious smart phones we change every year because OOh! New cute color?
If you truly love the planet then stop contributing toward its destruction by not using all of the above. If you keep using everything above, knowing full well how damaging this impacts the planet, some indigenous people, etc... then believe bitcoin is worse than anything else.
