Step Note Recorder 2.0.0 is in the shop!

It's a pretty huge upgrade that features a bigger display with a piano roll view, 2 curve channels (individually switchable between unipolar/bipolar output), trigger conditions, full support for shift/alt/ctrl-cmd, among other things. You can also record repeats, rests and curve 1 just by using your MIDI keyboard.

I think I asked that before. It is still not possible to activate the record button by remote protocol (with your midi controller), right?

No, that is not possible, at least not if you want to store the sequence persistently like Step does.

You could trigger recording and playback in a temporary buffer, though, which would of course be forgotten whenever the song is reloaded.

Wow, amazing... one question @buddard is possible to "bounce" notes to a reason's sequencer track or record the output when you done ? Like in the stock player devices

Thanks

Can I hope for record midi into recorder with note length (as drum seq player) as option?
And non-automable record button is limitation of sdk? Drum Seq can it, maybe step rec too?

Yes! If you're on Reason 10, the best and fastest method is to download Lectric Panda's free CV Player Tap RE and connect it between Step and your instrument like so:

Then set up the L and R markers in the main sequencer and simply click "Send to track" above the Player Tap.

I don't have any plans to add realtime recording at the moment since the focus of Step is around step time recording, but it's not impossible!
And non-automable record button is limitation of sdk? Drum Seq can it, maybe step rec too?
Although the Record button in Drumseq is automatable, I think this is a mistake on PHs part since the recorded data will simply disappear when you turn of the Rec mode via automation.
Or have you found a way to actually make use of that feature in a meaningful way?

This looks great. Are there more examples of conditional triggers? I'm curious how that works. You can just draw in the notes rather than recording, correct? I've added this to my RE subscription! Will probably buy if I like it. Also, could you potentially use this to control Umpf or a Kong? Like a Drum Sequencer on steroids?
In the 90s, my midi music was on the Baulder's Gate site. That was my life peak.

I will make some followup videos soon that go into more details. In the meantime, I recommend that you check out the chapter about conditional triggers on page 9 in the User Guide. And I'm of course willing to answer any specific questions you have about them!

While you could certainly trigger Kong or Umpf with Step, the main limitation of Step is that it's monophonic, so that might not be the best tool to program full drum beats -- But individual sounds, absolutely! You could have one instance of Step for each sound, and wire their gate outputs to the corresponding gate/pad inputs on Umpf/Kong. Or do parts of the beat with Drum Sequencer, and parts of it with Step.

Silly me, I got too excited and forgot about the user manual. The ReasonExperts video is awesome too... Thanks for the quick reply. I love all of your software! Tools like these keep Reason absolutely fresh and relevant between the major updates that Prop puts out.

Nice update. Especially that you can see the number of repeats and the repeat mode at the same time. And the conditions is a cherry on top.

The only thing I'm missing is a lenght marker in the beginning of the sequence so you could make the sequence shorter or longer from both directions (like the kodiak sequencer in reaktor).

That would indeed be amazing.

I've been brainstorming around it before, but I haven't come up with a great solution (yet). For example, since RE parameters are independent (especially if they can be controlled via automation or Remote), there's no way to ensure that the markers don't cross each other. What would be the best way to handle that case: Treat it as a 0-length sequence?

Another way would be to add the ability to shift the actual sequence data to the left or right (exactly like Shift on Drum Sequencer), a "Hard Offset" if you will. Shifting the data 3 steps to the left would be the equivalent of moving a "beginning marker" 3 steps to the right. although it would not be possible to automate it.
