Recently finished A Place Further Than The Universe, a 12-episode series about a girl going on a civilian trip to Antarctica to make peace with her mother’s death. Absolutely heartwarming and frequently hilarious, made me cry my eyes out, easily a top candidate for my favorite anime of the year so far.

Thanks for this. If I can find a decent English dub, I might be able to get my daughter to check this out. She loves anime (recently finished Yuri on Ice and is currently watching Attack on Titan). I have a feeling she'd love this. I enjoy anime as well, but I prefer a good English dub (I don't speak or read Japanese). Watching anime subtitled is always difficult for me.esselfortium wrote: ↑24 Apr 2018Recently finished A Place Further Than The Universe, a 12-episode series about a girl going on a civilian trip to Antarctica to make peace with her mother’s death. There's no English dub currently, but hopefully at some point!EnochLight wrote: ↑03 May 2018Thanks for this. If I can find a decent English dub, I might be able to get my daughter to check this out. If you haven't already seen these, two others I'd highly recommend giving a look:
Violet Evergarden, recently out on Netflix, about an orphan raised as a soldier now trying to come to terms with Emotions and integrate into a normal life after the war. Features some incredible talent at Kyoto Animation producing consistently film-quality art and animation on a tv anime budget and schedule.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica, personally my all-time favorite, a deceptively dark and very well-crafted fantasy-horror series with as much heart and compassion as it has twists and turns. Very different from how it appears. Features a devastatingly beautiful soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura.
They both have English dubs and are worth checking out if you're interested!

The Expanse season 3. Holy f@ck, it’s some of the best Sci-Fi on television since the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Yeah. SyFY's usual "three seasons and an ax" approach.EnochLight wrote: ↑10 May 2018The Expanse season 3. Holy f@ck, it’s some of the best Sci-Fi on television since the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Lol - yeah, saw that. First-run broadcast rights only apparently killed their ability to make any money off of the show (which seems idiotic for the studio who’s producing it). Really hoping another network picks it up.JiggeryPokery wrote: ↑14 May 2018Yeah. SyFY's usual "three seasons and an ax" approach.EnochLight wrote: ↑10 May 2018The Expanse season 3. I'm saving The Expanse s3 for a binge in the Autumn. I only discovered it myself two months ago and raced through it in just a few nights. And it was right bloody magnificent on the 2m screen too; sadly BST's a bit of a batch for projectors with the extra black-out required to start at reasonable hour for a proper big-screen binge. So I'm opting to wait for the blessed return of GMT so I can settle in for a proper quintrupel-bill.EnochLight wrote: ↑14 May 2018Lol - yeah, saw that. The Expanse, though, wow. By some margin the best FX yet committed to TV, although they're saving budgets for few setpieces, but what setpieces they are when they happen: that first one, CQB in season 1 for example, which is probably the episode that really kicks the show into gear after the rather intriguing but ultimately slow opening trio. (I can certainly understand how people might quit after three episodes). A lot of shows pull heavily from it (FarScape, Firefly, and Dark Matter are perhaps the most obvious), but even more than those, Expanse (and I presume the book) seems to draw on the influence of Blake's 7, with its rather dry, political framing before the fun action stuff starts (and Kerr Avon is the best character in SF TV). The difference is budget is telling. But last winter I was looking forward doing a full rewatch of BSG in HD on the Big Screen, from the complete BluRay set I bought last Black Friday. Big BSG fan here. I gonna get flamed and I hate to say it... but it's not that good visually. And the stuff on Caprica with Boomer and Helo is even more tiresome on a rewatch. Even given s1 has so much great stuff, I struggled to get to the end of season 1 and I've not picked it up since.
BSG is to the late 00s what The Last Starfighter is the mid 80s. Great, even groundbreaking visuals, for its time, but it's dated very badly, and very quickly. Things in between have dated less. The pilot in particular was a really hard watch on a big screen; it's got that worst type of shakey cam, not "normal" handheld camerawork, but that excessive nauseau-inducing type where the director has no understanding of the concept that humans don't fucking see like that, even though we're not screwed down on a tripod either. (cf the first Hunger Games movie too perhaps the singularly most egregiously idiotic usage of handheld I can remember. , or the annoying head-bobbing of the first STALKER game).
I'm still a bit pissed at the loss of Dark Matter actually. You gotta feel sorry for Mallozzi. That's the second time he's risked a cliffhanger but was pushed!
It was cheesy, and not comparable at all to The Expanse in the quality stakes, but it just filled the need for a drole, lightweight SF action show that the SG series used to slot into, and like SG, occasionally it could turn out a properly great episode. I loathed Agents of SHIELD that it lost me very early in s1, but 1-4 came up on Prime a few months' back, so with nothing else to do, I just restarted. s1 thru 3 are ropey, but then I'm glad I stuck with it, because suddenly season 4 (Ghost Rider/AIDA) and through season 5 (Kasius/Gravitron) it's become mostly brilliant (FitzSimmons are its MVPs throughout though, even in the shitty seasons). I'm almost hoping for a sixth season renewal.
Star Trek TNG still on repeat. It's a wonderful sleep aid.
I really enjoyed AMC's The Terror which I think they are still streaming on their site. It's so well done, but so bleak. Helps that in the second episode (when they come across a large cairn) the soundtrack uses a music cue from Tangerine Dream's Zeit album.
If you ain't hip to the rare Housequake, shut up already.
Damn.
Damn.

Yeah, I enjoyed the hell out of The Terror as well. That said, I was just glad to see Cirian Hindes and Tobias Menzies back on screen together (they played Ceaser and Brutus in HBO’s sublime “Rome” many years ago). And anything Jarad Harris does is awesome.Catblack wrote: ↑24 May 2018I really enjoyed AMC's The Terror which I think they are still streaming on their site. It's so well done, but so bleak. Overall, Solo is a decent to good science fiction film. With an RT score of 70%, I've certainly seen worse scores that I've enjoyed as much.

Solo is doing great for Disney's bank account. An amazing, amazing success story. Can't wait for the second week end's numbers.EnochLight wrote: ↑29 May 2018https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/solo_a ... ars_story/
