Thanks for the response. So if you want to own the fastest consumer CPU in the world ... they give us the new X299 (Basin Falls) chipset/motherboard.

You now get more or less 46 GB/sec RAM transfer data value!?! With this example LINK ability to transfer data value of 120 GB/s (half on the dual controller) for more or less the same price.

Does anyone have experience with AMD Ryzen?
For example, AMD Ryzen 7 1800X - how to compare it to Intel i7 8700k in Reason? What is better to choose?
Ableton Live Suite 10 / Reason 10 / Windows 10 / Fingers - also 10 ;)

Not just Reason, this applies to all DAW and Ryzen:

http://www.scanproaudio.info/2017/03/02 ... for-audio/

TL;DR: producing at lower buffer rates (latency) might be an issue for many Ryzen motherboard/audio card combos. Intel i7 or i9 is a safer bet for pro audio production workstations, IMHO.

So it's better to aim at intel. Thank you EnochLight.

Audio Interface :RME Babyface Pro -2048 max (but everyone seems to be testing @ 1024)

RESULTS
Complex RE = 55.5 seconds @1024 buffer- Crackles only start like 3 sec before
Complex RE = 57.7 seconds @2048 buffer- no crackles at all
Simple FX Chain (HT on) = 1 min 38 seconds @ 2048 buffer- no crackles
Simple FX Chain (HT on)= Completes @ 64 buffer (lower buffer plays longer!?! but crackles really really bad)
Simple FX Chain (HT off) = 2 min 30 seconds @ 2048 buffer- slight crackles start around 2.0 min
Simple FX Chain (HT off)= 3 min 16 seconds @ 64 buffer

Hello, this is my first post here. I'm a long time Reason user and am currently running into serious problems with my new PC build.

I just recently finished building my first custom PC and just finished writing, recording my first Electronica Album also.

I assembled an AMD 1950x Threadripper Workstation.

1950x Threadripper
64GB RAM
X399 Taichi Motherboard
Asus Strix RGB 1080 GPU
500 GB SSD
1TB HD
Enermax Liqtech 240 AIO Cooler
Corsair Vengeance Case

I bought this because my old Intel I7-4770 couldn't process a song that I was working on. It couldn't handle the Mastering plugins that I wanted to use. So - I figured I'd go all out on a new build - or close to it.

I did a fair amount of research - what I thought at the time was significant, but what is now in retrospect, just fair.

I was advised by the "bros" at Micro Center that their best AIO and best cooler was the Enermax 240 - so thats what I picked up and have been using. This keeps my CPU cool on idle at around 30 degrees C. Under stress tests, it gets up to about 68 - 70.

HOWEVER - I built the PC to run Reason 10 and Ableton Live 10 as my DAWS.

Ableton is NOT an issue - as it runs nice and easily.

Propellerhead Reason, though, does NOT.

First of all, the song I built the PC to PLAY wont play at "stock settings." SO - I HAVE to overclock to get it to run. Which it DOES. So thats GOOD.

The problem I run into is overclocking in Reason with the 1950x TR - even at 3.6 GHZ slowly begins overheating my system. The temps jump 20 degrees simply by opening Reason. Loading the song, then pressing "play" makes them slowly rise from 50 to 60 to 70 to 80 to 85, then soon after - CRASH.

Even if I press "stop" - the temps don't come down while in Reason. I have to actually CLOSE the program.

From what I can tell - this is the ONLY program that challenges my CPU and system like this.

I played Far Cry 5 and FF XV and have done Cinebench and AIDA 64 and UserBenchmark - and those were all stable and my system performed with outstanding results. Even NOW - I'm running at 34 degrees C at 3.8 GHZ.

So - I reached out to Propellerhead Tech Support - and all they would tell me is that "Reason has not yet been tested with Threadripper CPUs and we do NOT tell our users what to expect with upcoming updates" - which is just really stupid if you ask me.

So - boys - girls - nonbinaries - what are your thoughts here? Am I doing something wrong? Should I swap out my AIO? Should I go Custom Loop? Or should I wait for Propellerhead to TEST and OPTIMIZE before I do that?

Also - I wanted to make this thread/ topic/ issue AVAILABLE to people because as far as I can see - there is VERY LITTLE INFORMATION about this issue on the Internet for PC and Reason users - and I want them to be aware of this issue BEFORE they sink money into a PC Workstation build like I did. Not that I necessarily regret it - but they should be aware.

I open my song in Reason while overclocked to 3.8 GHZ and I just sit back and watch as my temps SLOWLY rise until my entire PC freezes and crashes.

Start with basics. Did you apply Thermal paste between the cooler and the CPU?

I don't know if this affects the Threadripper series, but AMD's Ryzen under-performs most Intel chips at lower buffer rates (think 64 - 128 samples). What do you have your audio buffer rate set at with Reason?

http://www.scanproaudio.info/2017/03/02 ... for-audio/

Also, overclocking Threadripper without a quality high performance water cooling solution is hit or miss at best, from what I've read. Are you air cooling it???!

I have a relatively new desktop for all my work:

CPU i9 (7940) overclocked to 4,4Ghz
Samsung NVME ssd
16GB memory (yes, not utilizing all channels yet. Too fkin expensive atm :))
Focusrite scarlett 2nd gen
Nvidia 1950ti
512/44.1

Simple HT OFF 2.38m
Simple HT ON 1.28m

Complex HT OFF easily through
Complex HT ON easily through

Thanks elMisse.

Here are the results for Reason 9.5 & Reason 10 Hton/HToff for my old desktop machine soon to be replaced:

CPU:Intel i5-4430 3GHz, 4 cores
RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR3 1600
Audio: Roland Quad-Capture, 44100Hz, buffer 2048
Wifi turned off
Windows 8.1

Reason 9.5.2d21
Simple HT off : 1min 5s, HT on: 1min 3s
Complex HT off: 0s, Computer too slow before hitting Play.

Reason 10.1d160
Simple HT off: 1min 7s, HT on: 1min 7s
Complex HT off: 0s, Computer too slow before hitting Play.

And here are the results for my Asus G75V laptop:

CPU:Intel i7-3630QM 2.40 GHz, 4 cores
RAM: 2 x 4 GB DDR3 1600MHz
Audio: Propellerhead Balance, buffer 2048
Windows 10

Reason 9.5.2d21
Simple HT off: 1min 3s, HT on:0 min 40 s
Complex: Computer too slow before clicking Play

...and finally here are the results from my Macbook Pro:

Macbook pro Retina, 15 inch, mid 2014
CPU:Intel i7-4870HQ 2.50 GHz, 4 cores
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Audio: Internal Audio, buffer 2048, cpu limit 95%, 44100KHz
MacOS Sierra ver 10.12.6
Graphics resolution: "Default for Display"
"Automatic Graphics Switching" unticked
Wifi Off, no extra stuff running in background.

Reason 9.5.2d21
Simple HT off*: 1min 44, Ht On: 1min 7s (crackling starts at 1 minute)
Complex: HT Off: 4 s, sounds like shit. HT on: 9 seconds, sounds good the first few seconds

*Second run I got 1min 38s, but crackling started around 1min 15s...possibly due to thermal throttling, fans started to work harder than first run.

I let it cool down a few minutes before running with HT

It's interesting that the MBP performs better than my desktop machine.
The impression I have is that something at some point in time crippled the performance on my MCP when running Reason. OS version, Reason version or something else I don't know.
Many things that can have an impact: I found out that having Blizzards battle.net on the machine isn't a good idea; the updater service frequently went crazy and started consuming huge amounts of CPU in the background until I fixed that.

Thermal throttling could also be a problem: I think it's time to clean the fans/cooling system on all machines, probably will find lots of dust and the fur from half a cat inside.

It would be absolutely great if the Props could supply tools for situational awareness regarding performance. Both in-application performance advisor and ditto for the OS.

Got a new update, the April update, and remade the test including the chain-fx which I didn't before. Results are back as with previous', on the 24th copy it basically stops playing.
Also set the RAM to 2400Mhz (max) in Bios and some other minor system tuning.
I don't know how to explain the simple fx chain performing worst of the complex multi-cpu vs single fast applies, given the i9 results, my cpu also
does not overclock much, from 2.20 to 2.29, that's it. 2.9ghz I never got up there, pc won't start.
Also new Reason 10.2 seems to perform overall a little better.

Xeon 2650V4
DDR4 2400
UltraliteMkII fw ASIO

Chain-fx test results:
64 samples: 33 secs
256 samples: 44 secs .pops and dropouts begin at 40.
1024 samples: 48 secs. p&d begin at 40 as well

complex
64: 40 secs p&d begin at 12, by 20 is pure noise.
256: 51 secs . pops around 44
1024: 58 secs. pops around 44 also and longer dropouts

That i9 7980xe is a $2000 processor.

That processor alone cost $600 more than my entire system cost at $1400.

There is an auction at 900 euro from france, more or less 1000$,
less expensive then my Xeon 2650V4 at 1200$

It's listed as bulk however, so it's somewhat a gamble, but it's rather tempting...

Hi,

I've just found this forum which I've seen some posts from time to time and I'm sure it'll be a great place for Reason users

Some of the posts I've seen are regarding the stress tests and it seems that even some pretty capable CPU's can't play them - Is this fair? - a 7700 K for example which is a strong CPU, OK not as strong as a 6 core or > 8 core etc or a 10 core etc.......

Hi,

Does the 7980 XE work with Reason and Reason see all 18 cores? - I've heard other DAW's can't see more than 16 cores 32 threads. I'm expecting an i9 7920 X -!

Yes, Reason will “see” all cores/threads. Your performance will vary, as demonstrated in various builds in this thread. I’d suggest experimenting with Reason’s Hyperthreading settings once you get your new machine.

CPU’s with high single thread performance ratings tend to do well with Reason in its current form. Be aware that Propellerhead have publicly stated they are working on performance and plan a free update later this year that may help, though.

On an aside, here's how the 7980XE compares to my 6+ year old quad core 3770k. While its overall CPU Mark (which takes into consideration multiple threads/cores) is almost 3x faster than my old chip, its single thread rating is a mere 11%-12% faster. :o :(

I hope my Acer Aspire M3970 i7 - 2600 @ 3.4Ghz 8Gb Ram serves me at least 3 more years still. And by then the prices have drop for i9 Intels.
