Nice! What CPU cooler do you have? Bought a Noctua there a while ago it is very good at keeping things cool!
I've currently got a 5-year old Enermax ETS-T40-TB as my CPU air cooler, and it's performed great. At idle it cools the cores to about 34C-41C. At max load, I'm seeing it keep things below 90C.

UPDATE: my system crashed after running Prime95 for about an hour at max load. I'm not sure if it was the CPU shutting the system down due to thermal protection (if it exceeds 105C, it shuts down), or if it crashed due to the overclock failing (not enough voltage or just instability in general). Might have to back things off a bit! :(

well, dang it, 2 weeks ago my windfall has been delayed up to another 6 weeks :-|

I might have to wait til new year

that’s probly gonna drive me right into the deep end of coffee lake

keeping my eye on Xeon and RAM prices, it looks like prices are rising in the lead up to xmas

I suppose it’s a good thing...

Built mine around feb/march prices seemed be lowest but there is no telling 100% really.

The RAM prices since I purchased a couple years ago have risen considerable!

Its funny how many HDD and other components go up before black Friday. Then back down to see how much savings you make compared to previous weeks.

Screw the entire PC component hardware business - especially RAM manufacturers. They were already caught once colluding to monopolize prices on RAM and keep them inflated (which was akin to extortion of all consumers); I would not be surprised if they're doing it again. I realize profit margins are low on RAM for manufacturers, but this is ridiculous.

There's awlays a sweet spot for purchasing tech. Ram (or any pc component), you have to know when to hold em, and when to fold em. For instance, is always best to get as much as you can NOW in the price-range you're looking for,

Tech prices typically work like this:

1. Early Adopter (expensive)
2. Mass Adoption phase (reasonable and consistent prices)
3. Late Adoption phase (less expensive, bundles)
4. End of production (prices rising)
5. Long gone (higher still)

Happens with a lot of tech, Ram being the biggest due to it being the one component that is often upgraded to more of the same.

I would normally agree, but RAM prices are just plain out of whack. For years (this would be shortly after Samsung's CEO literally went to jail for price fixing in the mid 2000's) RAM prices were actually quite reasonable. When I built my current machine a little over 5 years ago, I got 16 GB of DDR3 RAM - 1600 Mhz (not the fastest at the time, but pretty damn fast) for just $89 USD. EIGHTY. NINE. DOLLARS.

I built my kid's gaming machine just a few months back, and you know how much I paid for 16 GB of reasonably OK RAM (DDR4 at 3200 Mhz)?

$172 USD.

That's an almost 200% increase in RAM prices. Fucking insane, IMHO.

So yeah, screw that industry. RAM manufacturers can eat a bag of sticks. Except you can replace the "s" and "t" in the last word of that last sentence with the first letter of my actual name. :D

I dunno Enoch, I build a 'significant' PC usually a year, always about the same to me (all about the sweet spot for new builds). This year I'm splurging bigtime for my DAW and it's just a bit over what I normally pay. Just went through my last few partpickers all seems about right.

That's the only 'evidence' I have outside of my experience which goes back to the mid 90s. My first system I built after retiring my Amiga was built around a dx4 100 and been building them for myself and for companies ever since (I don't build them for companies anymore, just the occasional friend).

Exactly what I said, that holds true for most not just the Corsair Vengance. The same as it always has been refer to my chart above.

Recently released RAM also went up in price.

Demand must have increased also because of all those new processors. Lots of people wanting to build a new system after years of waiting.

You guys can ponder all day long why, compare brands, look at trends on various platforms, sites etc. Sometimes screwy things happen, but if you build often enough you know when to hold them and when to fold them - meaning sometimes you hold off building that new system even if you're due for an upgrade, and sometimes you upgrade even if you aren't due for one.

I've done this long enough, it's nothing new to me -- same as always usually with variances depending on supply and demand at a given time

Its that crazy time of the year when most of the money is spent leaving most people in debt for the rest of the year. Its not just families, people inflict it on themselves as well by buying themselves presents as well!

Well, you sort of just proved my point. Your 16 GB of DDR3 1600 was $220 USD for your 4 year old gaming machine. Just a year earlier, my 16 GB of DDR3 1600 was $89 USD. Sorry but that sort of disparity for RAM in just a year's time is just insane, IMHO.

Component prices for everything has gone up a bit, but RAM remains the one component that seems to exist in its own universe, and that's bullshit. I'm still not convinced that a price fixing monopoly isn't happening behind the scenes, again. I do hope I'm wrong, though.

The point I proved is I've been on top of pricing stuff for a long time, bout 25 years before those 4 systems in the last 5 years. Those are just ones I can show you that I had laid out for anyone who cares to look.

Also you are reading that wrong -- pcpartpicker shows current prices if the part is still available, not what was paid at the time. I checked my invoice and paid $124.99 in August of 2013. The current pricing shows how much more retired RAM is, as I pointed out earlier.

Memory, of all components, is the most fluctuating for a whole slew of good reasons, trends being a factor but far from the only factor, aside from the fact that your ddr3 is likely inferior to mine at least at the time, as even within the same speed variances of performance varies greatly - and so do prices. Huge fluctuation in RAM always happens.

I won't put anything past manufacturers, however what they may or may not do behind closed doors never affects my decisions - I know when to hold em and when to fold em.

Ah, so it's only a 140% increase a year later. My bad!

Nope. The RAM I chose was most certainly not inferior, and actually on par with yours (same CAS, slightly higher voltage, but extremely overclockable):

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6820104169

But yeah, RAM prices do fluctuate. It's just that the past few years, they've pretty much only fluctuated in one direction.

Oh it's never affected my component purchasing either. If we held out for fair or cheap prices to build, we'd be waiting for eternity to come. But you can't blame a guy for lamenting about how fucked up the industry is (especially RAM). But I lived through the whole price fixing snafu, and it'll always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I tend to early adopt when I have the money. Right now I am sitting on 8 year old vista machines and a 2011 win7 vaio as my main DAW workstation. My workstation does allow me to make money mixing audio...it is running great, actually. Those vista machines were all purchased new from the Sony shop on Tottenham Court Road, London (long ago closed down) . We spent mac money on our laptops in 2009. Yeah, they are getting very long in the tooth, yet, they are still churning along....even as the various software manufacturers pull out support from ageing products and latest releases.

I was thinking to go a different route this time, self build cheaper, outdated high spec components desktop workstations (the Aeox method ;-). That windfall is just around the corner...and maybe #2 Mass Adoption of Coffee Lake will be in full swing in early 2018...and I will early adopt again Looking at last year's graph, May is the low month

Is DDR4 gonna be worth it next month? 4,000 currency units for a fat stack of DDR4 seems very unreasonable. Then, another 4k currency units for the rest of the components? I am gagging for a multiple output interface as well...possibly RME...another 4k?....and that H8000FW I gotta have? also 4k...I might as well go 7K for the as yet released H9000 :-/ Pinch me! I need a new car and couple of roofs, too :-|

RAM is outta control.

Been toying about getting a second hand one.

Just been looking at a Dual Hex-core x5650 48GB, 120GB SSD+ 1TB HDD, windows 10 Pro for £622 (and I can claim the VAT back off that).

But as I say, I still looking....
Hmmm, well my windfall has hit the bank

Looking at that UK site and considering the Dual Xeon 2680v2 128ram I have been considering is sub $2000US (closer to $1500US) and is a waaaay better deal. Buying a Dual 2690 v2 with 128ram is £2800!!! VAT for me is an issue, as I can defer the VAT too...

Hmm, by the looks of it they should not add on VAT when exporting to the USA http://www.brighton-accountants.com/blog/vat-uk-usa/ however maybe they will add US sales tax on the import side of things.. that would be something you should check out.

My company, branAnonymous is based in Cambridge, UK
brandAnonymous is VAT registered in UK
I would be buying from US company, importing to EU (my studio is in France, I have no French clients, yet)

So, considering a £1200.00 difference in prices, (£1200 more if purchasing from the UK); the shipping and lesser VAT (UK customs gonna find a way to charge VAT on purchases abroad) by purchasing from USA is probably an £800 savings.

I have my budget at £3500 for computer + monitor, so I should be able to cobble something together :-)

if goin v3/v4; then mobo considerations become the next issue. All my research led to the same choice as TechSpot in an ASRock mobo. Looking at which mobo seasoned builders I found online were using, ASRock also appears to be a popular choice. There are ASRock mobos with more port configs than the TechSpot article; obviously that comes at a cost. But, then RAM prices hit you upside the head. DDR3 is still the place to go if cost is a factor. And like the article says, E5 2670 v2 (like Aeox's machine) was inexpensive...prices have gone up...at least on ebay.

V3/V4 mobos tend to be built around DDR4, if memory servers...and is exponentially more expensive as we have covered in this thread from the get go. Further, afaiaa, you gotta fill every RAM slot or CPUs will starve...yet another conundrum to the equation.

I am a little rusty, though, in my understandings and research...it's time to get back on the horse :geek:

As far as CPU goes, I don't want a 2670 v2 dual system, because Aeox has one. I'd rather provide other system performance info...I was thinking 2680 v2 to start. Maybe upping the CPUs to 2690 v2 in the summer. Then move to v3/v4 next year with DDR4 and/or possibly i9 late this year. I have several computers to buy right now, for various purposes. Also, I will be traveling a lot this year and will require a laptop of some config to work while on the road.

I am sure folks here want to hear about builds, keep it coming, y'all :-)

So, in the end, I chose Z370 i7 8700K. I am typing on it now...on a Gateway 2000 PS2 keyboard that's been shuffled around, unused since 2003
After all the research I did, I went to pcpartpicker and started config-ing. That took about a 2 weeks to decide between x299 and Z370 builds, weighing up the various options.

It took about a week to for me to put all the parts together and my main stumbling block was case fan knowledge. If I was gonna start again today, I could probably put it all together in about 5-6 hrs.

I went all Noctua NF-A14 PWM after first ordering and installing NF-P14 FLX and the vendor is fine to exchange them. I have to say, my set up is FAR from silent with these Noctua fans all on their lowest settings (~500 RPM). As much as I wanted to go Xeon, the power consumption is pretty high and my house power is iffy as of now.

Because of the iffy power, I also purchase an APC Back-UPS Pro 1500. I went waaaay overboard on Seasonic Prime Platinum 850 power supply. I bring this up because I wanted to build a SILENT computer and the last thing I wanted was a noisy UPS & APC Back-UPS Pro 1500 is absolutely silent as far as I can tell and I am very sensitive.

The rest:
ASRock Z370 Fatal1ty Pro Gaming
64 Corsair Vengeance LED 3000MHz (blue, it was the least expensive)
Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Kalmx (passive/ no fans)
Noctua NH-D15s cpu cooler
Cooler Master Mastergel Maker thermal paste
Samsung 960 Pro 500GB system drive
Samsung EVO 850 500GB storage
Fractal Design R5 Black w/window
StarTech FW card (I have a bunch of FW stuff, particularly PreSonus FSM audio interface)
Win 10 Pro

Some notes about my green-ness.

The R5 case is really over kill, I could have gone with something much smaller. I suppose I was still in Xeon planning mode.
The case and PSU manufacturers have to have all the bases covered. Frankly, it is pretty amazing how the case manufacturer supplies that much well laid out tapped holes and fixings...more later...

Samsung EVO 850 500GB storage

Some notes about my green-ness.

The R5 case is really over kill, I could have gone with something much smaller. I suppose I was still in Xeon planning mode.
The case and PSU manufacturers have to have all the bases covered. Frankly, it is pretty amazing how the case manufacturer supplies that much well laid out tapped holes and fixings...more later...
Congrats!

And the total build cost was..?
