Robotic Bean presents Resonans, Reason`s first physical modelling synthesizer!
Wow! I didn't expect that the day ReSpire comes to Reason I would have much more fun playing with another new synth!
Very well done! I can definitely see Mutable Instruments touch there (i have most of their modules in my eurorack) - font, colors of Model panel. And it is great to have external audio input - there's so much fun processing drums or 303-bass through this device.

It is unfortunate when a company uses its future customers as lab rats too, releasing a half backed product. Robotic Bean has always been respectful and their products top notch. We know who the RE Star Coders are and I'll always support this company, being among the ones bringing ideas that can be bridged seamlessly with the whole Reason paradigm. I own the euclid and the step note RE. I love the sound of Resonans and the design too.eusti wrote:Interesting demos... Might be a tad unfortunate in regards to timing this release... Give me a "home grown" RE developer any day of the week. Robotic Bean, JP, Lectric Panda, etc. these guys get Reason and that means, they get me.
Ouch!PSoames wrote:Ooo! Forgot to say. Loving Resonans too.
And it's in tune!

Really cool to see a groundbreaking new synth come out of left field from one of the long-time RE devs!
I wish the UI were more refined but at least it's readable. A little less contrast in the backgrounds and some more attention to visual hierarchy and rhythm on the typography would go a long way. Still, looks like it'll get the job done. The demos sound totally wild.

from the manual (3rd party license section):
anyway, thank you for this RE, Mr.Robotic Bean, I love it !
which part of Olivier's (Mutable Instruments) source code are you using ? The resonators ?Resonans uses some source code originally written by Olivier Gillet

As a guy who's been trying to get AAS to port Chromaphone to RE for years, this looks like a fine addition to the palette.
Do you per chance happen to know how this thing stacks up in relation to that vst?platzangst wrote:As a guy who's been trying to get AAS to port Chromaphone to RE for years, this looks like a fine addition to the palette.
I know this is way cheaper and it can process samples, which I don't think chromo can do that.
This is the year of the RE. All this and it it not even July yet.

Funny enough some days ago I was thinking about looking for some physical modelling stuff when VST is available in Reason. No need to look any further, 'cause we got Resonans now ! This RE is awasome!! Congratulations to RB for this really great instrument. It came just in time to make a gift to myself for my 50th aniverary on monday .
Thank you, instant buy, i was waiting for this since i've seen what Trifonic created with Sculpture in Logic. Thanks again!
I had an EX5 back in the day! I'd like to hear updates as to your thoughts about this new RE after you try it.Lov2sing wrote:If this is anything close to Yamaha' VL1 then it's an instant buy for me. That was one great board which they used the same technology in the EX5 and the sounds were incredible in it too. Way to go, can't wait to try it out.

Loving it, definitely sounds like no other rack extension.
Couple minor things I've noticed: some of the presets are very quiet. Seems like the Modal Resonator is biased towards the left channel (if the spread is above zero, of course). Wish there was a way to use the "detect transients" mode with audio in, without each key press triggering impulse (i.e. just the external audio doing the triggering---the keys just changing notes/chords). When you play a chord and then let go, often only one note of that chord keeps playing with the external audio, wish there was some kind of intelligent hold.

Sounds like a really interesting synth, always on the look out for a way to make unique sounds and I love this approach, excellent release RB
I have embraced Allihoopa. Come listen and play with my crap Figure loops here:

They really are crap.

I enjoyed making patches a lot on this. Resonans helped make the perfect sound and feel for this track which is deliberately playing with dissonance and "micro" sounds
The first String that comes in around 1:30 in this one is also Resonans
Delighted to see an RE Dev bring something distinctly new to the platform (and I got to sound design for it).

I use Logic's Sculpture all the time. Love it. I told myself I'd never buy another RE now that VSTs are compatible, but I'd actually consider Resonans. Not an instant buy, but it's at least on my RE radar, which is not easy to do these days.

Well, I haven't bought Resonans or played with it yet - for financial reasons I had intended to buy it with Spire but then Spire vanished before I got to it. (If that doesn't shake out soon I'll probably get Resonans anyway.)modecca wrote: Do you per chance happen to know how this thing stacks up in relation to that vst?
I know this is way cheaper and it can process samples, which I don't think chromo can do that.
But from a closer look at the Resonans page I can say they appear to be somewhat different in approach. Chromaphone has 2 resonators that can be linked in series or parallel, each with 9 settings like "plates" and "tubes" as well as settings for things like mallet hardness, so its sound generation may be a bit more varied than the two types of generators listed on the Resonans page. One of Resonans' generators is "Inharmonic String", and I'm not sure how that compares to Chromaphone's straightforward "string" resonator. Chromaphone does not have any audio input, so Resonans has a leg up in that regard. Chromaphone has more onboard effects: Eq, compresser, delay, chorus and reverb. Chromaphone also has a built-in arpeggiator. Both have decent modulation abilities.
So in the end, even though I already own Chromaphone, Resonans looks like enough of a different beast - especially with the audio input - that I'm not put off by the idea of having more than one physical modeling synth available.
Maybe when 9.5 is released I'll run Chromaphone through Resonans.
Very nice surprise, lovely and "different" sounding. As I make a lot of chill / atmospheric stuff these days this thing is right up my alley.
It doesn't have a lot of functions though, it's almost a sample player with a few specialty effects on top. Hopefully we'll see more models or parameters added in future updates.
Considering this, it seems a bit steep at $119 full price. At 50-60 I would pick this up instantly, not sure even at the $89 intro price.
That being said, you could probably save a fair bit by buying this instead of expensive kontakt libraries doing pretty much the same thing but without audio inputs.
So in conclusion a bit undecided on this, but a nice addition to the shop for sure. Cool beans
Edit: A dry/wet know on the model panel would be very useful when using this thing as an effect device.
