Previous Reason user that just got Reason 9. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the 808s slide like in this J. Cole song for example. I know a lot of songs do it but this came to mind first.

Use of the pitch bend wheel, and possibly dial in touch of portamento. Hope this helps.

You could automate the portamento which can lead to more interesting/unique glides/slides between notes because each glide/slide won't be the same as the one heard previous to it.kylekar wrote:ProfessaKaos wrote:Use of the pitch bend wheel, and possibly dial in touch of portamento. Hope this helps.
So like portamento automation right?
I feel most of what J-Cole is doing is using the pitch bend wheel (very quickly), but that being said you can achieve similar results with some portamento dialled in, so when you play higher notes in between the lower notes there is a bit of a glide/slide between them. Playing notes over a couple/few octaves will result in a more drastic sounding glide/slide.
Here's a video with simple ptich bend ideas.
Also keep in mind starting with a bass/808 sound that has very quick pitch modulation at the very beginning of each note is key. Here's a video that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
Hope this all makes sense.

All these methods will never compare to the slide feature on FL.
Try Mutant Re and its technology of Big Knob. It probably will not repeat a similar modulation but create no less interesting effects.

you could also go heavy on poramento and just play notes. or you could bind the mod wheel to control portamento amount.
but it's all about portamento and pitch bend

I have never thought of using the mod wheel to control the portamento amount, that's a great ideaGRIFTY wrote:^^^^^^^^ProfessaKaos wrote:Use of the pitch bend wheel, and possibly dial in touch of portamento. Hope this helps.

FL's pitch glide note feature is a great and unique feature which they have had forever, I don't really understand why no other DAW has adopted it.qoreybeats wrote:All these methods will never compare to the slide feature on FL.
You can tell more about this portamento?ProfessaKaos wrote:FL's pitch glide note feature is a great and unique feature which they have had forever, I don't really understand why no other DAW has adopted it.qoreybeats wrote:All these methods will never compare to the slide feature on FL.
We can modulate the portamento in Reason that does this. Even using notes.
