Hi,

i wonder how i can achive a bass sound for dubstep that seems to lag. so that its hitting a little bit later then expeted to get a draging feeling.

for example i have this clip from a dubstep/deathstep tune that has that kind of bass in it. its the higher one in this clip

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lo3f3e25zqrh ... s.mp3?dl=0

is it just bouncing it down and shift it a bit. or shift the whole midi clip a view ms? sure the lfo thats used is a bit laggy. i tried achieving this with pulsars "lag" feature but didn't come close to this sound.

any ideas?

Hi

Firstly Lag is really "smoothing", e.g. turning a Triangle wave into a Sine

If you want all notes to be late then why not try the Groove feature and shift the whole track back by up to 120 ticks. The other possibility (not having listened to the clip) is that there is a Shuffle so every second 1/16th is played late. Again the Groove panel is your friend. If the groove is more complex then make your own pattern using notes then import to a Groove Template.

Try using The Echo as an insert effect at 100% wet signal with zero feedback so there is just one delay, then play around with the delay time.
This technique is also interesting on high hats for interesting percussion effects.

What I believe I'm hearing in your example is simply bass patches with a slightly slow attack on the amp and/or filter envelope. If this is in fact the case, there's no need for groove/delay applications/effects!

As always, I look to the source first when going for any effect.

thanks for the ideas :)

will try with a groove template and also with the echo as a delay for the complete sound

i think slow attack on amp and filter on that single hit on the 1. but that second bass sounds like its filtered with a lfo, because of the variing speeds from 1/16 and 1/8T.

deffinitly need to work on this to sound better in my track, i like the feeling of the example it very much.

Using filters in parallel works well for this, try a LP and BP for instance and even use the exact same curves but nudge one backward or forward a bit... So automate them rather than using LFOs, though you can delay CV too.

Parallel filters in general work great, try two band passes for instance going all over the place.

I wouldn't be surprised if the timing offset comes from the Room reverb which I am hearing. Using some pre-delay that pushes the notes after the beat.

LFO, Env, same result!

Hi,

so i tried stuff out. finally i've come to a combination of slower attack on amp and filter envelope; Pulsar with modified phase modulating the LP cutoff and a slide of 100 ticks in the groove mixer. and there are only single notes to achieve the 1/8T and variations

i like the outcome :)

thanks to all sugestions, great forum!

Cool effect but I would put more low end in the track and bass sound. It's very midrancy now.
