I guess he uses the razor to cut for example from kick to kick and stretch that.

Giles! Many apologies for not seeing this sooner --- a side effect of being a lurker without logging in.

What I meant by that comment is that I've never used timeline automation for tempo matching. It had never even occurred to me. Instead, I've relied on tap-tempo and (lots of) razor editing. :)
