I'm giving this a whirl because
a) I know you and
b) the cover art is honest. If it were AI, despite knowing you I would probably skip.
First track, nice. Lovely to hear melody and pretty sounds (I was still expecting paint-stripper sounds).
Yes suddenly a different vibe with an Industrialized feel. Still, it has purpose in the way it goes.
Great sounds in most pieces.
My only real issue is with what seems a lack of development in the melodic ideas leading the pieces just stopping. This is such a prevalent thing and I know my pieces have started to suffer from that too - partly in hope that with a simpler (less musical) construction people may dig my work better. Hasn't changed anything past my own sense of happiness in the depth of my works.
If you ever consider a collab with someone...
Thanks for taking the time to listen Benedict.
The AI image generator thing made me take the step to actually release all the music I had made for the last 11 years. If the process had been harder I don't think I would have ever gotten off my ass and done it. So that was a good thing for me. At the time looking at AI images it felt fresh and it was something new. Then it became saturated really fast. But more than anything having more information on the matter I currently feel pretty icky about most AI related things.
Yeah writing longer songs that develop over time has never been my forte. I'm fully aware. I've tried to experiment with making longer songs a number of times, but it's like asking a cat to behave like a dog. It's just not in me. So now I've pretty much accepted that my creations are for the most part short and to the point. With some songs I do try to go the extra mile and extend them a bit if the song asks for it. With my 3 EP projects from 2023 ("Revival", "Unknown Species" and "Luna") I really tried to put extra effort in all those songs and mixes.
Other times I simply don't have enough willpower and energy to make a piece what it can be. Maybe the song is ok enough for me to finish and polish to some extent, but not great enough to really put my all in. In those cases I'd rather keep them short and at least finish them, rather than just throwing them in the trash and abandon them entirely. Not a perfect solution but I find it better than not finishing them at all. The younger me might have pushed through more with pure discipline, but the current me has a more relaxed attitude around creating.
I will say that some of these "songs" like the bits just over a minute long aren't really meant to be songs. They are more like short little experiments where the main aim has been having fun with sounds and trying out new things. But yeah calling the album "Songs from 2023-2024" will of course be a bit confusing in those cases.
At the moment I'm not looking for any collabs. I've got too many creative endeavours going already, but who knows at another time...
