A small piece that's been collecting dust until I decided to complete it.
Any feedback & suggestions most welcome!
A common challenge for me is to get the vocals sibilance ok, and that's a very weak spot in this one that I spent too much time trying to de-ess/fix when I think I really should have re-recorded it.
Listening to some of my "S" in vocals it's like my "S" sometimes transforms to the sound of a massive saliva river instead of a consonant.
Timeboxed it, so released with those flaws.
Re's/refills:
* Soundbanks/refills for Reason by Bitley(bitley.laconicsounds.net)
* Jiggery Pokery's Steerpike Delay and Chenille Chorus to make anything shine
* Synapse GQ-7 EQ to cut and boost.
* Seligs Leveler and de-esser for fixing vocal dynamics and sibilance.
* Onyx Tube Limiter to tame the peaks.
* Adobe Audition for manual tinkering,
* Mastered through emastered.com
The following sounds from Bitleys refills were used:
LA Jupiter 8
Automatic Padomat
707 kit 1
Mallets with spacious decay
PPG Choir
P O L Y S Y N T H M A G O R I A
Synclvr Bells 1
LinnDrum 1
Glocken Ist Zu Speil
Drop A Voice
Dirty funk bass
analogvetu
Thick Synth Lead copy
Composition process overview
I start with having the complete lyrics available.
Making a drum beat.
Experimenting with chord sequences when looping the beat.
Slowing down the tempo, then recording the bass.
Record the vocals through comp takes, few seconds long each.
Sort the takes in each recording so that I have the best center vocal take on top in the comp take list, and left/right vocals below.
Export each Center/Left/Right take to the disk
Edit each selected take in Adobe Audition: (Using shortcut buttons setup for compressor & limiting at different levels; like pressing SHIFT-5 compresses at threshold -5dB and CTRL-5 hard limits at threshold -5dB)
- Remove everything below 80-100Hz or so
- Fix spikes, clear noise in silent parts.
- Manually adjust significant dynamics differences within a clip to get it fairly consistent.
Import the vocals to reason into center, hard left and hard right channels
Pitch edit
Use Selig Leveler on each vocals track to control what's left of dynamics inconsistency
Add automated effects on selected spots.
After that, start the finalizing process to review it and find the weakest 3-4 spots, fix them. Repeat.
Upload to emastered.com for mastering.

Nice! Love those Bitley sounds! Also really like how you detailed everything you used, really great if I wanted to figure out what one of the sounds are. Thanks for that. Your voice is kinda of reminding me of the band When in Rome. Maybe the whole track actually. As your title says its got an 80s vibe. Thanks for sharing.

Yo really digging the 80's sounds you used.
You mentioned you had issues with the vocal sibilence but honestly through my monitors and headphones your vocals sit just right in the mix.
Keep it up!

Thank you!
The problem with vocals can be heard in the intro: "...rockS in SpaCe".
Another great retro track! Nicely done and thanks for sharing it!
Thank you for feedback!
Hah, I forgot to note that I also used the handy Selig de-esser; updated the device list.
There were a couple spots I couldn't fix with it though, but listening to the raw file reveals that i'm feeding the de-esser with shit in so getting shit out.
It's not just the sibilance strength but also odd overtones which I suspect I can only correct with microphone technique and proper singing.
The first bell from 1:15 is layers of "PPG Choir" and "Mallets with spacious decay", and the second part is "Glocken ist zu speil"
A great track - 80´s like...superb*

Not sure how I missed this. Great song! I love the lyrics and your singing is getting better and better! I especially liked the line "I am the illnessand the cure".
Still nostalgic about the old days, writing songs with my Amiga 500, Korg M1, and Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler.
Thanks for the kind words! Some Desperate Glory wrote: ↑15 Aug 2018Not sure how I missed this. Great song! I love the lyrics and your singing is getting better and better! I especially liked the line "I am the illnessand the cure".
